Mmi - Complicated Ethics Questions ( Please Help)

Recommended Posts

This is how I'd go about this:

1st step, gather more info. How do you know that the teacher recycles questions? Did he say they'll be the same? If so, maybe he provides old tests for all students on the course website. Did your older friends say that? It may be that their test last year was recycled but this one could be new, so the questions you have aren't the same and likely won't benefit you as well. <- You won't know this until you take the test though.

Unless having this test is something that was authorized by the prof, and everyone else in the class has access to, you are committing academic dishonesty and could face consequences for this such as failing the test, failing the course, or expulsion from the school in severe consequences. Following the assumption that this test shouldn't be in your hands, giving the information to your friend, regardless of whether she needs the help or not, is involving her in an unethical action that could lead to consequences for the both of you. You should avoid using the questions yourself and study for the test, and you should not tell her anything about the questions.

If you feel confident about your abilities in the course, a good solution would be to offer your friend help with course content. You could study together and clear up any difficult concepts and that way both of you are more likely to do well. If you do not feel like you are competent enough to help her, you could direct her to some tutors on campus, or suggest that she meets with the prof at his office hours to get more help. Empathize with her and tell her that this is a tough course, and you want her to do the best she can in it. You should tell her that you don't know any additional things about the exam, but suggest the above options to help her improve her grade.

What if you already looked at the previous test. You can't unsee the questions. Do you tell the teacher that you looked at the old test so she knows not to recycle the questions? Then if teacher nullifies the old test and doesn't use the questions, shouldn't all the students have access to it then?

I think its worth mentioning that side of the story. If you did look at the questions, it would be important to tell your prof about it. You would meet with them privately in their office and inform them that you have access to old test questions and this would probably give you an unfair advantage. You would also mention that you would be ready to accept any consequences as a result of your actions. If the prof says that he hasn't reused test questions this cycle, you can mention to him that he can give the old test questions to the class so everyone can have practice questions.
