Lost. Second Ug, Grad School, Fifth Year...?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Sorry this is such a repeat topic, I'm just feeling a little lost. I've been working on my undergrad degree in Bioethics from U of T since 2012. Due to a couple disabling medical conditions (that have only gotten under control in the past couple months), I've had to take reduced course loads, semesters off, deferred exams, etc. I feel that now that they've been diagnosed and treatments have been successful, I don't think my health will seriously impact my ability to do medicine.

I've been working as a research assistant at a hospital in women's health and it's sort of re-ignited my desire to go to medical school. Back when I was in first year, I had a 3.9 GPA but due to the waxing and waning nature of my conditions, my GPA has dipped to a 3.3.

I'm set to graduate in April and I'm hoping to get up to 3.5 with my remaining credits. I haven't written my MCAT yet, but with my health looking up, I think I could do really well.

My question is what I should do to help my GPA? Keep in mind I've taken a reduced course load which excludes me from pretty much all favourable weighting formulas.

I would really appreciate some guidance from you lovely people :)

You will need to do extra year(s) or a second degree (I believe you can complete these in two years?). Grad school will not help if your undergrad GPA is not already competitive or close to being competitive.

Take a few months to adjust to your newfound health. Once you feel ready, I would recommend taking a full course load in your extra year (or two) or during your second undergrad. This would allow you to be competitive for at least Western, Queens, and potentially Mac (the MCAT being the other crucial factor).

Good luck friend!
