Can Depression Undermine A Person's Autonomy?

Recommended Posts

Il y a plusieurs types de dépression et de niveau de sévérité. J'aurais tendance à dire qu'il est plus probable qu'une personne en dépression majeur de type catatonique ou psychotique a effectivement une autonomie diminuée, en raison des symptômes.

Sometimes, depression can undermine people's ability to make rational decisions in their best interests, which justifies the stripping of their autonomy. With depression- it can be extreme and can cause individuals to engage in self-harm/self-destruction where they still arrive at that decision through a logical thought process but the outcome is disastrous. The key point is that their depression is causing thought patterns that lead to self-harm, whereas other options exist for such an individual but they cannot recognize it because of their mental illness. From my time working in an ER, we intervene with severe depressive patients that plan on suicide by placing them on an involuntary hold until a formal psychiatric evaluation has been performed on the patient. The logic there is that their mental illness impairs them from making decisions best suited for them.

In summary, the healthcare institution can strip one's autonomy when it appears that their mental illness is leading to destructive outcomes for the individual.

It is true that the severity and the extent of depression can vary according to the root cause of depression. Other than consuming antidepressant, there are many ways to overcome from such situation like healthy food habits, talking with the voyance direct experts for consultation, meditation along with regular exercise.
