Does anyone have any experience at the university of alberta for undergrad before applying to Med School? Which programs are most common for "premeds"? And how is the campus, campus life, profs etc? There really isn't that much information on UofA from students, and I just want to hear your opinions!

From BC but went to UA for med. how I think I got in was with stellar marks. You should look at the bigger picture, what med specialty you want later on. Safe bets.....business, engineering, computer for lots of specialties ........and pharmacy or physio for GP.

UofA is decent overall. Like everywhere you go profs are hit or miss depending on the class, subject, who wants to teach that year etc...

Can't comment too much on campus life since I never lived on campus nor do I stay other than for extra-curriculars or studying.

Common programs are Science, Arts, Engg, and various pre-professional programs...... pretty much like every other university.

I am also from BC. Where did you do your undergrad and did you enjoy it? Right now I'm considering both UVic and UBC for universities in BC, but I'm pretty unsure.

Hi Kate - I just graduated from UofA. I have a suggestion for you - I'd apply to Grande Prairie Regional College. They have a two year science transfer program to UofA. When I went to GPRC i kept a 3.925 GPA whereas at UofA I had a 3.59 and a 3.73.

I had 2 med school interviews this year. So GPRC really helped me out! (Especially with my 506 MCAT)

UofA is great. Big enough to have every opportunity as any other university but small enough that youre not overwhelmed with 500+ students in a single lecture hall. Campus life is pretty good and enough ways to get involved (and still have fun)!

Definitely look into courses, profs and see what suits your interests. If you want to go straight for something medical, hit up physiology or pharmacology or neuroscience. If you want a more diverse experience, consider doing a general bio degree or delve into social sciences like Psych (highly recommended but also biased) and Soc and Anthro. If you want to keep options open in the future for post-BSc careers, consider Engg or Nursing or Business or Comp Sci. Don't do anything to "impress" med schools via degree choice, just enjoy what youll study for 4+ years and work hard.
