Should I Take 5 Courses In The Summer?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! So for my first two years I did the regular 5 courses per term in the fall and spring. However, I did an 8-month co-op work term over the summer and fall of year 3 (3A). I am about to complete the second semester of year 3 (3B) and in a couple days I will be registering for my summer courses to catch up on year 3A. The problem is that I can really only find 4 courses to take since the variety of courses in the summer is super low. The main reason I want to take 5 courses is so I can have a full year taken away when the AGPA is calculated. Any tips?

At UBC?

Are you planning to apply this Sept? How many credits are you at now? Afaik UBC does not consider credits taken during the summer prior to the application year in the calculation of gpa so you'd be killing yourself for no reason... and maybe your gpa in the process... [ex: will not consider grades from May to Aug 2017 in this cycle (2017/18)].

What classes were you considering and have you taken summer classes before? They're usually accelerated and I believe there is a limit to the # of credits you are permitted to take due to this fact.

Just apply with what you've got, take fall and winter courses and keep up with your ECs. You might luck out with your non-agpa and score an interview. Use the summer for ECs or get a job/do clinical research if there are opportunities available or if you really want to take courses, take a few - not five.... My $0.02...
