Should I Apply This Year Or Strengthen My Application? (Gpa+Ecs)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I am debating if I should do the prereqs that I am missing to apply this year or if I should wait to apply next year and improve my Gpa and ECs in the mean time. Here are my stats:

1st semester: 3.3 gpa  :(

2nd semester: 3.75

3rd semester: 3.8

4th semester: ~3.85 projected (I hope more)

If apply this cycle, I'll have a cumulative GPA of ~3.68. (I know it's a low gpa but maybe the upward trend can make up for it a bit?)

Sorry if it is long, I just want to know if I should try to take on the two prerequisite that I am missing this summer in order to apply this cycle or I have no chance because of my low Gpa.

Thank you in advance!!

Great job on the GPA improvement! Do the pre-reqs and apply. There is a subjective component to the academic evaluation which may or may not help you, but anyhow, I know of a few high 3.6ers who got interviewed and/or got in. With a solid effort on the CVPN you definitely have a chance :)

When you say 4th semester, do you mean you are just finishing your 2nd year ?  If so, did you do a Quebec pre-year (DEC) prior to starting your undergrad at a Quebec University ?   Just checking if you are eligible to apply in 3rd year.

While SunandMoon points out a 3.68 is possible for an interview, I suspect most of the lower GPA's that got interviews had completed Undergrad/Masters.  You don't see many interview invites on here from early Undergrad below 3.8.

As far as I know, other than the CEGEP route, there is no way to get an interview unless you were at least in your graduating year. I do not know if being in graduating year puts you at a disadvantage compared to people with completed undergrads in any way? The people I know of did not have a completed masters. Of course your odds are lower, but you should still definitely apply. If it works, great, if not, you know what to do! :)

Exactly! Ill lose nothing by applying so I think I might as well try! Do any of you have any advice for what I should include in the CVPN? For example pre-university Ecs? Also, I was offered a scholarship at a University but decided not to go there, should I include that in the awards section??

You can include pre-university ECS, but I wouldn't go beyond CEGEP years. As far as what to include in your CVPN, focus on what you learned from your experiences to date. People can do all kinds of impressive things on paper, but if they're not able to talk about how those things challenged them, and how their experiences have helped prepare them for a career in medicine (etc), they're not worth very much.

I also would not include an award that you did not accept (ie, you never received the award, despite it being offered to you).
