Independent Student

Recommended Posts

Hello! So, I accepted my offer to UofT and am in the process of figuring out how best to finance it. I'm wondering if there is any way in which OSAP would consider me an independent student so that I don't have to state my parents income (since they won't be helping me at all). I just finished 3rd year so I haven't been out of high school for 4 years. If anyone has been through this before, let me know what I should do and who I should contact if possible! Thanks in advance!

I don't know the answer to your question about OSAP with any certainty (I think the answer is no).

However, most of your loans will come from a bank line of credit rather than OSAP.

Bring your letter of acceptance to a bank. I'm not certain if all the banks work with dental students but I know that RBC and Scotiabank do. Certain branches have people who specialize in healthcare students (for example the RBC and University and Dundas.

The vast majority of my classmates have a bank line of credit. I would highly recommend you getting it at the maximum amount, even if you don't feel like it is necessary. There is no interest unless you take money out, and there is no other loan (besides a mortgage I guess, but that doesn't count) which will give you prime, so use that to your advantage!!
