sgsw454
I am writing this post here to get more exposure if someone has insight on this issue ....I applied to Med School this past year, interviewed, but did not have a high enough overall score to get accepted. However, in this past semester of my fourth year some very terrible things happened to me. I am from Honduras, and found out that my grandmother, uncle, and two cousins were murdered, our house back there was broken into and trashed. This caused great anxiety on my my family, my father had health problems when he found out his mother died. I was trying to do as well as I could in school this semester however my GPA for the semester was a 3.1...making my GPA for my fourth year a 3.4. This poor semester negatively hit my overall GPA and reduced it by nearly 0.1....I have never had a poor semester as bad as this one and my grades were pretty consistent. My GPA wasnt the most competitive to begin with, and I feel like I just barely scraped an interview (although for my IP school GPA isnt worth much and people can get accepted with much lower than what I currently have even with this decrease)....should I mention this in the additional comments section of my app this coming year? What are the pro/con/repercussions of doings so? Thank you very much additional info- for the school I am targeting they consider trends in grades and I dont want the fact my GPA suddenly dipped to negatively affect that score, do you think they will take this incident into account? SunAndMoon
No cons whatsoever, you should do it. Sorry for what happened to your family

I am very sorry for what happened to your family. I think med schools will definitely take your situation into account. I would also encourage you to speak to your school counselor and possibly the dean to appeal to have the grades removed from the transcript. Many schools have academic concession/leniency rules for extenuating circumstances such as this.
OwnerOfTheTARDIS
I think that this is the textbook definition of 'extenuating circumstances'. Definitely mention it - it can only help you as it is clearly a circumstance far beyond your control that affected your grades. I can't imagine even finishing the semester under similar circumstances. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Meridian
You don't mentioned the school(s) you are targeting, but not all give you a chance to explain prior to interview consideration. Some are pure formula based on GPA/MCAT/Casper etc. Suggest you check with the specific school how to proceed.
Bambi
I see no downside to go for extenuating circumstances.
