Should I Bother Applying

Recommended Posts

I know I can find this information online, but I also want to spend as much time studying for the MCAT so I am hoping someone on here can help me out. I want to apply to USMD schools but because I partied too much in my first degree, I had to do a second degree.

1st year (AMCAS): 2.6

2nd year (AMCAS): 3.2

3rd year (AMCAS): 3.45

4th year (AMCAS): 4

5th Year (AMCAS): 4

6th Year (AMCAS): 4

7th Year (AMCAS)(Only two courses so would this count in GPA calculation?: 4

cGPA: 3.55

MCAT: 513 (125 CARS)

I do NOT have a calculus credit, or an English credit. Although I do have the sciences, upper sciences, and some statistics credits.

I think my ECs are well above average, and I have worked in a medical clinic where I have shadowed various different specialists and surgeons for well over 100 hours (I know this is important for US schools).

If I have a shot at some schools then I will start filling out applications, but if not then that time will be better spent on the MCAT.

American schools care about an upward trend, so if your later years include 300+ level courses then you will be in good shape for some schools, GPA wise. You will need a signifcantly better than average MCAT though, and lots of schools will have English as a pre-req. Buy the MSAR, and look at which schools have matriculated intentional students in the last 2 years. Look what their MCAT distribution is so that you can see what you need to get score wise. Consider some research if you don't apply this year. When you apply, in your personal statement, discuss your academic reinvention, not as too much partying, but at some point a realization that you were not meeting your potential academically and so returned to demonstrate your academic prowess, etc.
