NSERC please help

Hey guys, I just finished my first year of university at the University of Toronto. I have secured 5 research positions but I had a question relating more along the lines of NSERC-USRA

I know this is a very "noob" question but what is NSERC-USRA exactly? How do I get involved? I've been hearing it a lot and I really want to know whats so special about it? Thanks

It is a research award in the form of a stipend. This award is your payment over the summer, instead of you working for free or the PI using their grant money to pay you. 
 

Generally speaking you apply for those in the winter preceding your potential summer position in a lab. These are great because then PIs don't need to pay you, and it really gives your CV a boost.
