  1. Result: Accepted Geography: OOP GPA: 3.96 MCAT: 508 (129 CARS) <--Yes, you can get in with a low MCAT as an OOP! Degree: Bachelors of Commerce (2012) (No science prereqs) E.C: Non-trad applicant. Years of work experience in Investment Banking, Travel Agency. My volunteering activities are mainly cultural or entrepreneurship related. Won some top-level business awards. Black belt in Taekwondo. Grew up working on a farm. Traveled to over 35 countries. Fitness Mentor/Advocate. (No research at all) Interview: Felt most prepared for the U of A interview as it was my last of 3. The questions were more straightforward than UBC or McMaster. I really, really enjoyed the panel. I felt like I finally had a chance to talk about myself and show my personality. The panel interviewers were very nice and conversational as well. I felt iffy on the MMI. On 2-3 stations I did blah and the rest of I did okay. I think my ECs and Panel Interview really pulled through for me. I'm just so grateful right now to have received this opportunity. As I am writing this, I still can't believe it. After 6 years of contemplation, denial, and self-doubt, I finally now get the chance to become a doctor. When I found out that the results were released on this forum, I was at my desk at work. I literally just got up and ran out the door. I nervously tried to login to my account and ended up keying my password wrong 3 times. To avoid getting locked out, I had to call my fiancee to check my result on my home laptop where the password was already saved. When he read the admission decision to me over the phone, I crumbled to my knees and started crying. It was an unbelievable moment. I felt all the worry, pain, and doubt just wash away. I'm sure everyone that walked past me thought I was crazy. But I didn't care. This was the best day of my life. 3. Result: Accepted!! Geography :IP GPA: 3.51 MCAT: 509, CARS: 129 Degree : BSc E.C: Diverse & some non-traditional. Long term volunteering, research project, lots of work experience. Interview : I felt it went really well, I would even go so far to say it was enjoyable. A few of the MMI stations touched on things that I've spent a lot of time discussing in my degree so I think that worked to my advantage. This was my first application cycle and U of C was my only interview, so I am just over the moon. I've been told before that I should not even bother applying to medical school with my "low" GPA. To anyone who doesn't have a 4.0 and feels they don't have a shot - don't give up!!

FM + 1 EM ... where to start

If you want to go for the 2+1 option without any applications to the 5-year EM program, your electives should be typical for that of any other FM applicant. That is, 2-3 FM rotations and then a mix of whatever interests you so long as it has relevance to FM. A few EM electives would probably be recommended, if only to jump-start your abilities for residency and develop contacts as you move towards the +1 applications, but aren't strictly speaking required either. If you're really looking at a few days of clinical practice plus a few ER shifts each week, I'd probably recommend against doing the +1. Currently, the FM+1 program in ER is more intended for its graduates to work in EM full-time. As the other posters have noted, doing just a bit of one probably leaves you without enough regular experience to be sufficiently competent in both. If that's the practice mix you're looking for, the best option currently would probably be rural practice in places with a small ER department. These are usually staffed by FM docs without a +1 in ER. These ERs function more like walk-in clinics, with fewer patients who tend to be less acute overall. The higher acuity patients still may need to be dealt with, but because resources are limited in these rural ER departments, anything that requires urgent management often has to be shipped out to a larger centre. Overall means fewer skills to maintain (though there are still very valid concerns about whether such patients are receiving a high enough standard of care). FM +1's work in all sorts of emergency departments, including in saturated areas. Competition for those jobs is fairly steep, and I'm told there are a few hospitals that have practice groups that seem to prefer Royal College applicants (can't say I personally know which ones), but going the FM+1 route doesn't seem to restrict practice location too much, at least for the time being.

  5. Hehe I know I just wanted to clarify that myself for others!! Sorry I know I am just a first year, but all this has me super anxious and it feels like that I am back in undergrad trying to compete - didn't expect that it would be this hard or complicated!!
