  1. This is an excellent point. For those students interested in Internal Medicine, get some experience before your core rotations. Then you'll look like a superstar next to your classmates. On my rotations, a couple of classmates had done this and they really were outstanding compared to the rest of us (who didn't want internal at all).
  2. Interesting...this is one of the first times I have heard this endorsed. I guess that makes sense since having earned Honours would demonstrate academic ability and distinguish you from others since at P/F schools basically everybody has a P. Is it true that the Committee has access to specific evaluations from core GIM rotations for Toronto students? (e.g. the more indepth evaluations, marks on oral and written exams)
  3. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like you really enjoy what you do and everything worked out in regards to residency.
  4. I agree - some of the American schools are amazing. I personally was amazed at the amount of money that must go to these schools, especially the private ones with large private donations. Plus the school atmosphere (and college sports) is very different and exciting too. I knew a girl who had a choice between Vanderbilt and Columbia, and chose the latter even though they offered less funding. But her family is very wealthy. So I know it happens, but I also see a lot of people applying as a back-up. I guess some of them fall in love with a great American school. And I hope I don't offend anyone by saying there is a big difference between Vanderbilt and say, Wayne State (extremely Canadian friendly but with high tuition and not one of the "impressive" schools.) moo - congrats on having what sounds like a wonderful experience at NU and being able to work slavishly to pay off your debts. I probably have less debts that you did, but they are making me anxious. Doesn't help that I overheard some senior residents/fellows talking about how difficult it is to find a job. I swear I never worried about money until recently when repayment is expected
  5. Had a couple of elective students from NY (Albany, I think) in the past. I know these boards aren't representative of the situation, but how many people accepted in the States actually end up going to American schools? (based on the responses here). I assume most would prefer a Canadian school for financial reasons. After just browsing here briefly, some past applicants sound very strong and I think would ultimately end up being accepted by a Canadian school.
