canada747 got a reaction from Meningocoele in How to get over your enemy's success?
Honestly, the trick is to worry most about your own progress and no one else's. I used to be like you, and had people like "Josh" in my life. Over time, I just stopped caring, and wanted to work at being better for my own sake. These days, I'm starting to lose that perspective, and your post reminded me that I need to do that. If we live to compete, we'll win at games we never wanted to win. Don't become a doctor to beat Josh, do it for you. It's a tricky thought. There's also a whole branch of philosophy that says our desires are *all* copied from seeing what others want.

Now that I'm in med school, I find myself wanting the dumb things my peers want - money, prestige, instagram likes - instead of being my happiest self (which at the end of the day, only needs *some* of that). Good luck, PM me if you want any more advice.

As a fourth-year medical student, what costs should I be aware of/account for during the next 1-2 years? I understand that there will be a cost associated with CaRMS applications (no interview fees this year), LMCC Part 1 and 2 writing fees, USMLE Step 2 CK and CS for those with US fellowship aspirations. There will also be costs associated with relocation and home purchasing/increase in rent if moving to a HCOL city.
I was wondering what else I was missing and the approximate costs of these things (eg CPSO fees? Surgical foundation exam fees?)
Do people still use their medical student LOC in residency? I feel like it'd be hard to afford a semi-decent lifestyle in a potentially HCOL city like Van or Toronto on a resident's salary.

I dont think so, it's basically a registration for a systematic review.

One of my best purchases ever was a set of construction grade ear muffs. I used them to study for my MCAT and sleep in a noisy house. Best $20 I've ever spent.

Try playing white noise using noise-cancelling headphones. You could also use noise-cancelling earphones if you have glasses and headphones are uncomfortable

You do electives in ortho, be friendly and work hard on electives. That’s all. Ortho is not competitive in Canada.

But I’d recommend exploring all options when you start med school before committing to any particular specialty. Often times clinical practice differs dramatically from pre-conceived ideas of what a given specialty is like on a day-to-day basis.

Netflix subscription is key. Preclerkship is a joke. Enjoy the extra time with your family, study the minimum, enjoy life. Learn about different specialties however you can with this whole online curriculum.

Hey! Yes, I know one former nurse in my class. They're a great student, and honestly seem super knowledgeable. So it's definitely possible.

OSAP gives you grants that you don't have to pay back, as well as a loan.
And from my understanding, the loans from OSAP have no interest until you graduate / finish but LOC has interest throughout your studies.

I can't speak for every PD that will see your application but that logic is weird when applied to anything else: "This applicant has research on cervical cancer, he must have cervical cancer!" etc. It's Canada in 2020, you'll be fine Although it would reuire 3D mental gymnastics to be homophobic to a straight male
