iFlayx got a reaction from Heart2HardWork in Accepted/Rejected/Waitlisted??? (for current applicants)
    Result: Accepted off waitlist (2:14PM)
    CARS: 129
GPA: 3.56 (Got lucky with CASPer I guess)
Interview: Felt great coming out, I guess it really worked out for me.
    Year: Graduated B.Sc in 2016
    Geography: IP
Good luck to everyone! It is possible with a low GPA, just try your best and things will work out with some luck

Besides the obvious hurdle of the GPA not being high enough, that sentence I just quoted appears to be the biggest problem to me. It's good that you identified (one of) the problem, but you need to show that you are able to solve it. Until you get past it somehow, any attempt at improving your GPA in your current degree, taking a new degree, or writing the MCAT is not going to lead you to where you want to go.

....well that is the case It extremely rare for them to not to interview someone with the cut offs. The reason is simply the cut off was set specifically to create a set number of people eligible for the interview.

The thing is everything judges themselves differently. The best if you are consistently scoring 129 or higher on the practice exams, then it should demonstrate that you can perform equally well on the actual MCAT.

iFlayx reacted to Edict in Confused about USDO and International Options
USDO and USMD are great because you are basically guaranteed to match to the US and you have a decent shot at matching to Canada if you want (for US MD). Matching to Canada is not that easy since you have to split your electives between Canada and the US and things can get competitive when you are trying to outmuscle CMGs for their own spots especially with the current shortage of residency spots.
I believe US DOs are considered IMGs in the big provinces which means that you might have a harder time matching to Canada. Going to the US as a DO is mainly to ensure you match to a residency in the US. You can complete your residency in the US and still practice as a doctor in Canada (will be hard to find a job as an academic in certain more competitive locations though).
If your goal is to match to residency in Canada, CMG > USMD >> USDO/Ireland/Aus > Caribbean. Anecdotally, most of the IMGs who match back to Canada are from Ireland with a reasonable but lesser number from Australia and the Caribbean or other IMG schools (e.g. Poland). Ive yet to meet a US DO who matched to residency in Canada although that could be due to the fact that most US DOs end up preferring to do residency in the US and the numbers going to US DO schools are smaller.
If your goal is to just be a doctor in North America, CMG = USMD > USDO >> Caribbean/Ireland/Aus.
The cold truth of medicine is that pedigree does matter. If you want a competitive specialty or a competitive location, going to any of these schools will make it more difficult. I've yet to meet a DO staff in an academic position in Canada although I have seen a few in the states. If you don't mind about all this nonsense and would be happy in community and/or are interested in a less competitive specialty, then you don't need to be as picky on trying to get into Canadian or US MD schools.

To add to the above. Once you hit 129 for CARS you will be guaranteed an interview at Western (assuming full course load for your 1st, 3rd and 4th year) and you will be competitive for Queens and MAC (dependent on CASPer). Uoft you will need to calculate your wgpa first. Ottawa is out of reach.

Look at my stats. They are really low. It just goes to show that MANY schools have forgiving policies for admission.
Western: Two year over 3.7 (Full-course load)
    Queens: Last two years
McMaster: Over 60% is from CARS and CASPer
    U of T: Drops 1.0 per year (full-course load)

It seems like you already know what you have to do. Do well on the MCAT (like spend a whole summer on it), do your absolute best in courses and worry about the ECs later. You'll be fine. It's not too late yet. Best of luck!

I'm very sorry to hear that it did not work out for you. It is very depressing to not have the support of family when you are chasing such difficult goals (for everyone, really).

If you need someone to talk to, feel free to speak to the mods as they have a lot of personal experience and advice as to how to cope with the whole process. I am also an applicant who has not found success this cycle and really all we can do is put our best foot forward. There are far too many qualified candidates and it takes multiple tries for one to land an interview, not to mention an acceptance.

My advice would be to surround yourself with positive people and stay away from negativity. This process is far too stressful for you to be dealing with other **** crap going on in your life. Do things you enjoy and stay with friends that support you throughout your endeavours. Best of luck and I hope you keep moving forward.

On the other hand, perhaps some mod/admin could give some advice?
