  7. Lots of ECs and life experience? I think what helped me with my app is I was able to demonstrate that I was a candidate that they would want and it worked. Craft a good application (in addition to a great GPA) and you're most of the way there
  8. To the OP, you'll be fine. UofT's official cutoff is 3.6 but they publically state you need a 3.8+ to be competitive. I got in without a grad degree with a wGPA of 3.87 during the infamous 3.96 average GPA year.
  9. As long as your reference knows you in a professional/academic capacity and can speak of you in a positive light without mentioning the relationship with your family, it should be fine. Just ask her to speak of how she knows you through your youth group coordination or as a student or both. If you can't trust her to speak of you strongly in those capacities without mentioning how she knows your mother, then I would suggest finding another reference.
  10. I think the reason why these arguments are so pervasive is because they are largely true. Many of us in the program don't have 4.0s and many of us benefitted significantly from the weighting formula. Many people with 4.0s do get rejected because UofT has a holistic application process that takes the rest of the application very seriously. I know it's easy to dismiss these arguments, especially considering how stressful the application process is (trust me, I've been there), but people don't say them just to hear themselves speak. They say them because based on their own experiences they have to be true in order to explain the make-up of the class.
  11. To the OP, you'll be fine. Even in my year, the infamous 3.96 average GPA year, many of us (myself included) are baffled at how we made it in with GPAs that are NOWHERE near that number. It's a holistic process - you need more than good grades to get in here.
  12. In first year there is a dedicated clinical skills course where you are in the hospitals interviewing real patients and practicing clinical skills once a week. In addition, the new curriculum has a built in day off (Wednesdays) where you can do what you choose, but you will be encouraged to use some of those Wednesdays for shadowing and observerships. There are also organized observership programs at UofT that allow you to shadow a specialty for an extended period of time like pediatrics, psychiatry, or surgery. On top of all that, in 2nd year there is a family medicine learning experience course wherein you shadow a family physician for 6 weeks once a week and also practice your clinical skills in their office. I was concerned with early clinical exposure too when I was making my choice, but as you can see UofT med offers A LOT of opportunity for exposure early on.
  13. Nah, I think people are miffed because the OP is complaining about a 30 minute commute. In the grand scheme of things, the distance is not really that big of a deal. Mississauga is a "different city" but it's so close and accessible to St. George. MAM is a gorgeous campus with an incredible community! To the OP, I hope you choose to accept your offer. You'd be missing out on something really fantastic.
  14. Good luck, everyone!!! And as a reminder, don't let the timing of emails on decision day fool you. I remember feeling pretty low when everyone on the forums said they got into U of T around 9am and I still hadn't heard yet. Turns out they waited until 10:30am to send me my acceptance so they could give me some money too
