  1. How would this impact grad applicants? Would we still need to have our supervisor write a letter?
  2. Hey, did you end up figuring out if IB HL English credit meets their english requirement?
  3. Selling the newest version of Casper Sim for the Mind for $30. Just bought it two weeks ago before my test, so it is in mint condition. I can email you pictures if you would like to see it's condition. I can drop off in GTA or London, ON (Western Campus).
  4. Thanks for getting back to me Meridian. Are there good schools that I can attend for less that 400K? I'm including all the costs, i.e. tuition, rent, textbooks, etc. My parents are willing to help me as much as they can, but I think that is maybe up to maximum 100-200K. Would I be able to get the LOC if they are my co-signers? What are the implications of that?
  5. Do you guys have any advice on how to pay for tuition/cost of living overall for US med schools? Looks like the cost will be around 400-500K in Canadian dollars.. so how does someone pay for this?? (coming from a middle-income family, Asian therefore ORM). Are there scholarships available for Canadian students attending US med schools? From what it looks like, the largest loan you can get is 275K...so how would you find the rest of the money? Also, how long would it take to pay off this debt? Please feel to correct me if I cited anything wrong. I think I have decent chances to get into a US school but I'm a bit hesitant to apply because I'm not sure about how the finances would work out
  6. I need to include a minor note about my transcript in the academic explanation part of the applications. I think I may have a minor anxiety disorder (self-diagnosed, have an appointment soon with doctor to find out more).. Is that going to be a red flag on my application? Should I avoid putting this down in case they may think that I cannot handle the stress?
  7. Hi guys, I was wondering how you convinced your mentors (i.e. lab PIs, professors, etc.) to support you on your path to medicine? How did you convince them to support you to become an MD rather than pursuing a career in research/academia for example? I'm asking because I'm trying to get my PIs (who are also MDs) to support my efforts to pursue medicine instead of getting a PhD (or even an MD/PhD). What challenges have you guys had regarding research supervisors (or other mentors) who have a strong opinion on you joining their field of work instead of medicine?
  8. https://theconversation.com/ca/health This site seems to have good articles on current events in Canadian healthcare! Worth checking it out!
  9. Hi guys, I know lots of people have been posting these already so I was hoping to get some feedback as well. I just finished my 4th year of UG and I decided to do a 5th year to bump up my GPA. For reference, my GPA is: 1st year GPA: 3.52 2nd year: 3.743rd year: 3.79 4th year: 3.83UofT wGPA: 3.86Queens (2YGPA): 3.81MCAT 1st try: 504 (127/122/128/127); Retake: 510 (130/125/126/129) Although my GPA trend shows an upward trend, it wasn't ever a great improvement to 3.9+ so it sucks I kind of plateaued there, but hopefully I can get at least a 3.9 in my 5th year if I really just focus on school. I think my ECs are a bit average too: - lots of volunteering experience with science outreach for kids, pre-med conference co-chair, volunteered with TBI patients, summer camps, doing some work with Indigenous youth as well, and just some other small club involvements - I did a surgery observership with a neurosurgeon for about 50 hours - 2 years of research experience, 1 pub (but not 1st author), 1 summer research grant, presented at a few conferences I'm IP for Ontario, and from GTA, so I don't fall in any of the special pools (i.e. swomen). I decided to take this summer off from MCAT and just continue research/ECs this summer but I'm afraid that I will need to retake to improve my CARS score because McMaster, Western, Alberta, and Calgary all need 128+ and then from the Queens thread, it looks like I need 515+ overall. My GPA is also still too low for Ottawa, so that is not an option. My only one left is UofT, but I don't think my GPA is strong enough for that. I just feel really lost in terms of where I should start to improve my application? I feel like I'm in this awkward pool since I'm falling average in everything but do you guys have any suggestions on what I can constructively do to improve? Should I retake the MCAT next summer and start working on my CARS now and throughout my 5th year to really improve? What can I do to make myself stand out in terms of ECs? (i.e. more volunteering, more shadowing, more advocacy roles??) Thanks in advance!
  10. Hi guys, I was wondering if there is anyone in Montreal right now who would be interested in preparing for the CASPer test and start looking to prepare for interviews as well? PM if you're interested!
  11. Yeah I didn't graduate. Do you think I should contact schools to verify if they check if my 5th year courses are degree or non-degree?
  12. @rmorelan Is it okay if I'm doing a 5th year, but technically already did the required courses for my degree? As long as I follow the 3/5 rule and still continue taking courses related to my program, would the school be able to verify if the courses I took were "non-degree courses"??
  13. Does anyone know the Western scale? i.e. is it really: 80+ = A = 4.0 70-80 = B = 3.0 etc.
  14. Hi everyone, I'm in my fourth year of undergrad right now, and I've sent in my application for UofT, McMaster, Queens, Western although I am not too optimistic yet because of my numbers. 1st year GPA: 3.52 2nd year: 3.74 3rd year: 3.79 4th year: TBD UofT wGPA: 3.85 Queens (2YGPA): 3.77 MCAT 1st try: 504 (127/122/128/127); Retake: 510 (130/125/126/129) ECs: research as a work study study in summer after 1st year, volunteered in the hospital, research assistant for 1.5 years (no pubs yet, but did 1 poster presentation), 1 summer student research award, lots of volunteering, co-chair of an undergrad conference, surgery observership etc. (I don't know if there's a lot that stand out, but I feel like my ECs are not bad) If I don't get in this cycle, would you suggest that I do a 5th year to bump up my GPA? Retake MCAT for higher CARS? Do a 1 or 2 years masters program, with my current PI or another lab? Work as a general research assistant in my lab for another year? I think I have most of the prereqs for US schools, so I want to apply there in June, but not sure which schools would be good for my stats and which ones are still in mid/high tiers..
