  1. So I found the student handbook online (page 10: https://cloudfront.ualberta.ca/-/media/pharm/programs/documents/bsc-in-pharmacy/student-handbook-2016a.pdf) and I'm pretty sure the specific classes you named are second year courses... but maybe someone else on the forum would have a better idea and would be able to comment on this?

I can confirm that those are second year courses !

  2. Also, since a prerequisite gpa is calculated based on this Bsc pharm prerequisite, how much do u think it's looked at vs overall ?

    ( just finished my degree)

My prerequisite gpa : 3.44 (lower)

    Overall gpa: 3.64

    Recent 30 credit- this year : 3.6

I am nervous as I am not sure if I stand a chance as everyone seems to be very competitive here !

It is hard to say, however Runner5 briefly touched upon this based on his/her experience.

    Hi Bobcat,

I found FAQ reflect accurately for me for the most part; however, there may be discrepancy in terms of whether the admission favours your overall grade (emphasis on recent grades) or your prerequisite mark. The two university links (admission site and University Calendar site) gave contradictory information to each other.

For those applying after 1 or 2 years, their prerequisite grade and overall grade is practically the same thing. I have finished my degree, so when I applied, I phoned the office and the office told me that 2 years ago, applicants used be ranked based on their prerequisite grade, but they changed the focus to ranking applicants based on overall grade last year and hasn't had the chance to change information on University Calendar website. My friend who phoned last year was apparently told that applicants were ranked based on prerequisite grades still. I made it in last year despite having pretty low prerequisite grades, though my friends pointed out that I grossly underestimated my prerequisite grades...

The best advice I can give to anyone wondering (if prerequisite grade is more important or if overall grade is more important) is to take upper level of prerequisite courses you think you did badly in (ex. BIOL 107 --> BIOL 207), do well in those upper level courses so you can replace the prerequisite mark and boost your overall grade at the same time

Hope that helps and good luck! :)

  3. Hi, just wondering , I completed my interview on April 28 and last year I read that offers were received starting May 31 (one student got an acceptance then and onwards)....... any anticipation as to when out admission results come out ?

The website says end of June and in the email when I asked , they said July and on the previous forum from last year someone got their offer on May 31....so I was kind of confused ??

    Hey Rpsi,

I feel like there is some variability between each year when the admission results come out (since the number of applicants each year isn't necessarily the same every year) as well as considering that the letter of intent's format also changed this application cycle. I believe that last year offers were given out between early June and throughout July (roughly).

  4. Hey guys. For those who have done the interviews in the past, how did you guys prepare for it? Did you just do the practice questions provided to you? Is there anything else i can do to prepare?

Also, what sorts of questions do they ask? Like are the questions geared towards health care, or are they just general personal questions?

Lastly, i'm just wondering why in the video, the associate dean says interviews are due by the third week of may. The email notice says the deadline is May 31st. Does anyone know the reason for the discrepancy?

    Thanks

I practiced with the questions provided just to get more comfortable with the system and the whole process itself. I also prepared myself by coming up with questions about healthcare and personal experiences as well as my responses to those questions. I found it to be really awkward at first but I became more comfortable with practice.

In terms of the due date, I would maybe send an email to Rae just to clarify the official date.

    All the best !

  5. Hey guys, I am doing the practice questions but I keep getting interrupted by a "Connection problem". I have tried different browsers, restarting my laptop but still the same problem. Anyone tried doing the interview on campus? Does it work well there?

    Hey manos13,

It happened to me a couple times last year after practicing about a dozen times. I'm assuming that my connection at home wasn't the best but I managed to get a stable connection during the interview. You could give campus a try just to see how the connection is there!

  6. hey y'all, I am doing the practice now but I am just wondering is the actually interview only 1 minutes long for the answers?

    That's really short omg

    Hey Lil_pink,

Last year practice questions ranged from like 40 seconds to like 2 minutes but the interview was about 5 minutes in total with a small break inbetween each question, I'm not sure if it will be the same this year.

    Hope that helps!

  7. Hey guys I know this may sound awkward  but I wish to understand some details about the admission progress, like the cGPA, pre-reGPA and other aspect that keeps you competitive for admissions. Thanks

    Hey Boboeat,

If you haven't already, I think you should definitely check out their FAQs! They do answer a little bit more regarding how admission averages are calculated.

    Here's the link: https://www.ualberta.ca/pharmacy/programs/undergraduate-bsc-in-pharmacy/prospective-student/frequently-asked-questions

    Hope that helps!

  8. Hey everyone, I think my question might be a little silly but I'll ask anyway! On the U of A website, it says that the requirements are:

Where it says "successful completion of a combination of university level course work", does anyone know if they prefer us to take more science related courses or can we take any courses that we want? I've already completed the prereqs and now I'm just trying to decide what courses I should take next. For those who have applied already, what other courses did you guys take besides the prereqs?

    Thank you!  :)

    Hey pharmacy2016,

I continued to take courses to complete my degree after completing my prerequisite courses, which consisted of random electives and some science classes. From my understanding (correct me if I am wrong), if you have your prerequisite courses completed you can take any courses you want combined with the prerequisites however from the FAQ it says that:

"We encourage to take courses related to pharmacy prerequisites, such as genetics, microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology, and other science-oriented courses."

Courses like such can make some components in PHARM 306 and PHARM 321 more of a "review" for you rather than learning new material.

    Hope that helps!

  9. Hi Pharmgirl96, do you happen to remember the timeline for interviews last year? Reading previous years' forums it seems that most people did theirs in May or early June but I was hoping for a better time estimate as I am going travelling. On the admissions website it says that interviews are due by the end of May but I was wondering if you know how far in advance prior to the deadline they usually open submissions?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi kmiksche,

Last year interview invites were sent out on April 20th and the Online Interview due date was on June 5th by midnight. It might not be the same this year but I hope you can use these dates as a rough estimate!

  10. Does anyone know if U of A Pharm counts IB english as fulfilling the prerequisites for 6* english?

I heard from someone else that it does count as fulfilling the prerequisites for 6* english as long as your IB English score is 4 or greater. I could be wrong but it is best to double check with admissions.

    Hope that helps !

  11. Hey Guys! Just found this forum now so i'm a little late haha. Anyways I got accepted on June 9th and I am super excited to meet you all! Also I saw that there is a facebook group, any chance one of you could send me a invite?

    Thanks

    Hi hansen.adam96,

I believe you can join the Facebook group by clicking on the link provided by the welcome class of 2020 email and then entering your ualberta email. It will be shortly approved by one of the administrators in the group.

    Hope that helps!

  12. Where could I find more information about transferable classes? I completed my degree and was wondering if I could get credit for any of those classes. Thanks!

    Hi PharmStew,

I am also in the same situation as you and I emailed Rae last week and she informed me that there are actually no published expectations for which courses can be used as options and the grades do not count toward your GPA in Pharmacy. The only 'rules' in the UofA calendar states that you cannot use a course that was a prerequisite to get you admitted to the program and you cannot use two 100-level courses in the same subject (for example, ECON 101 and ECON 102).

I also listed four classes to see whether they were transferable and Rae got back to me saying that they were transferable and that there was nothing further I needed to do for this requirement.

    I hope that helps!

  13. I believe that it is a separate tuition, as a 'spring course.'

On another note, has anyone heard anything from the university? I guess they are busy with admissions right now, but I'm hoping that we will hear about registering for courses soon!

Nope, I haven't heard anything from the university yet. Is anyone planning on purchasing a parking permit? If so, which lot(s) would be the closest to our classrooms? Thanks!

  14.

Hey everyone, congratulations to everyone admitted so far! I received acceptance on june 28/2016! I sent in both my forms and also payed the deposit- is there anything else needed to be done before july 8th?

    Hi pharmacy199,

Congrats on your admission! I believe that's everything for now! Did you get a response back yet for submitting your forms and paying the deposit yet?

  15. I got a reply however I sent the forms and deposit in the first week of June. The $175 should show up on beartacks as either a spring or summer payment.

Okok I think it went through as it says under account summary it says Summer Term 2016: -$175. However I still haven't received a reply for sending in my forms and I am getting quite nervous as the due date is coming up.

    Thank you for your help!
