premed_thr0waway got a reaction from heydere in How many residency positions are given due to nepotism?
Seems our friends across the border go about matching in a much more standardized manner. No one likes tests but if you have major examinations that are standardized across the country, it would be the most fair and effective way of determining residency eligibility. As far as I know (just an incoming MS1 so please correct me if I'm wrong), there isn't a STEP 1/2 equivalent in Canada (or at least Ontario). Speaking anecdotally, I know quite a few people whose parents or relatives have lead to them matching into derm or optho; people which by no means are exceptional or top of their class (actually, one of them was literally bottom 10% of her graduating class).
So this begs the question, do we need to reconsider how residency positions are attained in Canada? I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially those who've already started or finished residency.

P.S. I know having these tests doesn't completely eliminate nepotism, but it's definitely a start.

And prison is just a room jokes aside, thank you everyone else for the reassurance. 99% of me knew there wouldn't/shouldn't be an issue but sometimes neuroticism takes over, ya feel?

Neither - you'd be expected to possess the level of maturity appropriate for someone entering a professional program, who would be seeing patients soon after, and potentially treating them independently in a matter of several years. This applies to all candidates regardless of age.

Seems like you applied to Ottawa, etc. How? Did you skip a few grades? I didn't know that was possible in Canada.

lower MCAT/GPA makes me think you're SWOMEN, a.k.a. you're gonna be fine, lol. 60-70% post interview acceptance, just go in with confidence and familiarize yourself with your application.

    1) I sent an email asking and have yet to hear back. Considering I have to answer by Monday, that option is getting sketchy.
    2) I have called the admissions line and get a voicemail roughly 90% of the time. I cannot have her call me because I am in school 8-4 and we would end up playing telephone tag so there is no point in leaving a message.
    3) From my understanding the 3 strikes system exists because if you fail an interview thrice, you have screwed up at the stage when they met you in person and got to know you on a heightened level. I guess the school assumes something is wrong with your character (as if your admission isn't heavily dependent on those simply applying with you at the time). You can however apply as much as you want if you are declined an interview. I sit in the middle at the moment which is why I am looking for some semblance of an answer.
    4) I don't want to fly to Ottawa to interview if I won't be losing a strike because it's expensive and I've pretty much committed to something else for the next year. If it counts as a strike though I may as well go for it and at the least get interview experience or a really, really tough decision to make. Honestly I'd rather just not, so I'm hoping to bail at this point without consequence.

The trick is to assume Queens will already reject you. Did this for all the schools I applied to - the interviews I got became way more meaningful/surprising and those I didn't were expected so nothing lost Call it pessimistic but it works!!
