Just checking that we didn't need a criminal records check at this time?
My friend in nursing had to get one done, and it made me wonder if thats something we needed to submit already #momentofpanic

I was in your shoes for the past three cycles, seeing a lot of my friends get accepted and talk about how excited they are about this year's bag color, among many other exciting things about starting medical school. I felt disappointed and feel left out when I'd received my rejections, two of which post interview. To some, the bag shows how far people have come and overcome the rigors of the admissions process and view the bag as an achievement, along with things like the white coat ceremony / stethoscope ceremony, as a small welcome to the medical community. Others don't consider it much of anything, just a free bag and it gathers dust in their closet at home. I think you should recognize that to some it matters quite a bit, and can have considerable disappointment when the look isn't something they were hoping for, so it's completely legitimate for incoming medical students to express some disappointment. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on a color, and should be free to voice that opinion. We're not discussing this on the pre-med section of the forums, this is the section for medical students. Furthermore, nobody is forcing you to read these discussions.

Hey @LittleFrog - I understand that it can be frustrating seeing posts and threads from people who have been fortunate enough to get to where you're hoping and trying really really hard to get to. Medical school admissions is a tough process for most people, and we know that we're in a privileged position. With that being said, I don't think it's fair to insinuate that incoming (and current) medical students have no right to [lightheartedly] complain. There is a reason that there are different sections on premed101, targeted towards different demographics, and it would similarly be completely out of line for current med students with a lot of debt and no income to say residents and staff have no right to complain about salary and compensation because at least they're getting paid for example. Good luck with the upcoming cycle!

I know usually incoming students find out the backpack colour early July during Calgary's first week, but since they're starting virtually, does anyone know when the new backpack colour might be revealed?

I know one person that was accepted to a different site, and then was accepted off the waitlist to VFMP on the second round offers. In case that helps anyone in their analysis of the process!

I've been taking advantage of the research done by our predecessors and peers on the LOC forum thread. I am going to go with Scotiabank, and have been in contact with an extremely helpful representative from my local branch. I've been wanting to switch banks for a long time so I will be able to open new chequing/savings accounts with Scoita at the time of getting approved for my LOC. I wanted to get the process rolling early because I don't know what my eligibility will be for any grants, bursaries, or student loans... And I cannot afford the tuition with what is currently in my bank account!

Oh that could explain it. I am also faculty of medicine staff.
Looks like the second year class will be planning some open air events for us (in line with provincial health guidelines)! I can't wait to meet everyone!

Think about all of your money and debts in one big pot - what’s going to save you the most overall?
The point of rainy day savings is to allow for cash flow when you have an unexpected or big purchase, to avoid having to borrow money expensively (e.g. pay day loan or credit card debt). But what is the point in ‘rainy days savings’ when you are actively using your LOC in parallel? You have the low-interest LOC to provide cash flow in an emergency.

I think only makes sense to keep money in savings on the side if your savings interest rate is more than the loan interest rate... if that’s not happening, then you’re actually costing yourself more money every month, because you’re accruing interest on debt you don’t need to carry. I think it usually makes the most sense to use your savings first, and only then borrow from your LOC, otherwise you’re paying more in interest than you have to. (I'm assuming we're talking regular savings here and not, for example, an RRSP which has potentially expensive tax implications and may need to be draw down more wisely).  . . . can any of the more financially informed on here can think of a situation I’m missing where this doesn’t make sense?
So to answer your interest payments question: I let the interest payments get added to the loan. When I have income here and there (for example when my student loan comes in, bursaries, side jobs, etc.) I am paying down the LOC as much as possible. Not just paying down the interest, but the principle. Then when I need money, I take it from the LOC again. I accrue as little interest as possible every month by keeping the principle as low as I can. For example, say I get a $8,000 student loan, but my tuition isn’t due for another 2 months. I pay down my LOC while I have the cash, and for those 2 months I’ve reduced the total loan I have to pay interest on by $8000. I’m still taking money out of the LOC for rent, etc. every month. But it’s still a relative savings.

They usually give them out along with a little presentation from MD Financial, so I doubt they'll mail them directly to you bc they love their chance to advertise to us haha. Honestly my best guess (if in person orientation is a no go) would be a presentation over zoom and then dropping the backpacks off at your school and leaving it up to admin to figure out how to distribute...fingers crossed there's some in person component to orientation for you guys bc backpack day is so exciting!

    Hi Everyone!
I was wondering if any current students had any input on what stethoscopes to purchase for the UBC medical program?
From what I've heard, both the Littmann Classic III and the Littmann Cardiology IV are acceptable. Any input on which one will serve us best?
    Thanks so much.
