  1. Your electives should help you become comfortable and confident in your choice of specialty. That can mean challenging yourself with another specialty that could also hold your interest. Who knows, maybe you'll fall in love all over again. And that's thing: it's difficult to switch specialties once you're in residency so your best strategy is to avoid making a decision you'll regret.
  2. There were no MMIs for CMGs in the first round at Dal FMED. However, Casper was required so you may want to check into that if you haven't already taken it...
  3. Top 40 programs only account for 40% of derm residents (ie 60% come from schools you've probably never heard of), and 80% of derm residents have no graduate degree of any kind. So yes, connections certainly help, but the NRMP statistics do not fit the picture you paint.
  4. I applied into three less competitive specialties, yet not once was I pressed to explain my (very) eclectic choice of electives during the interviews. And honestly I think it makes sense - were I an interviewer I'd be much more concerned with a candidate's overall academic / clinical / professionalism than whether they spent every waking hour obsessing over my specialty. Anyways, that was experience as a "broad-spectrum candidate".

  6. Are we still waiting for UdeM internal medicine to send out invitations?
  7. In the US it is common to reach out to programs who have passed you over. This is from the student affairs team at my school (in the US). "If there is program or two that you still haven't heard from but you are super interested in [...] It is best to contact the secretary who does the scheduling, rather than the Program Director, most of the time. A brief explanation why you are interested and state that you are willing to be called with short notice can sometimes yield an extra interview or two."
  8. That is a surprising result. I'm sorry you didn't get the Ottawa interview. Perhaps you will receive an invite later...McGill fmed invited me a full week after the program first appeared in the thread.
  9. What is your applicant category and where did you apply?
  10. Received an invite from this program today. Hopefully you will hear back from them soon as well
