  1. Hey guys!

I was waitlisted lasted year and ultimately got in so just wanted to give you some info based on my experience last year. I was waitlisted in the first quartile and ultimately got accepted on June 3. I was the last person on this forum to post my acceptance, although I deferred to this year so somebody below me on the list ended up getting my seat but they weren't on the forum I guess! Based off of that.. it seems like they didn't even clear the first quartile waitlist last year. They started rejecting people in the 3rd and 4th quartiles around 2 weeks after May 15th I believe and I'm not sure when everyone else got their final rejections.

One of my references notified me that they changed their number (due to work from home) when I informed them that they may be contacted soon. I have sent an email to update their contact info with admin but worry a contact attempt may have already been made. Does any one know if the University will contact you for updated info if this is the case.

This happened to 2 of my references last year. 1 wasn't getting the emails even though all the contact information was correct, and one changed emails. USask emailed me both times for an alternate contact since they couldn't contact my referees. I was accepted. Can confirm it won't have an impact on your decision!

Does a UAA of 86 and an MCAT of 506 give me a strong chance for admission? Would I have to do amazing on the interview to get in? It seem like with the stats increasing every year,  I may not be as competitive. Thanks for your help!

I got accepted this year with a lower MCAT and similar/maybe a bit higher GPA btw :)

  4. I think that this year, because they know in advance that it's online, you guys will have a more structured MMI and possibly more stations. Obviously just my personal opinion! But there was such little notice for everything going online last year I'm sure it was a bit of a scramble for them to set it up, and they won't have that problem this year.

Wow thank you guys so much for the responses! I had never heard of that residency before but after seeing what you guys have written and doing some research myself it sounds very cool and right up my ally! Especially since I was already considering Family Medicine, it's awesome that you can become certified in it through the residency. The only thing I'm disappointed in is that Dal doesn't have PHPM as a residency (I'm Nova Scotian, hoping to get into Dal Med, and wouldn't have minded the option to stay here for residency as well). When looking at the schools that offer the PHPM residency, I see that there seems to be very few spots - does anyone know how competitive it is to get a PHPM residency or if the number of slots are correlated to the amount of interest in the field since it doesn't seem to be the most talked about?

This is purely anecdotal - but I'm in the MPH at UBC right now and one of my good friends is in PGY-1 in their PHPM program so he's currently in my degree program with me. He graduated from med at U of T. From what he said, the specialty doesn't seem to be super competitive because the interest is low compared to other specialties. This may change in the following years though, especially with public health professionals being thrown into the spotlight lately!

  6. To add to rmorelan above, the Public Health and Preventative Medicine residency at UBC automatically includes taking a Master of Public Health degree which you can tailor to health policy by choosing your electives and practicum that way. I'm not sure if all PH&PM residencies include MPH's as part of their training, but you'd be well positioned to work in health policy either way!

  7. Just to add to this - I also had a rough start to my undergrad (W in a couple classes, D+ in OChem, etc.) but showed a VERY strong upward trend in managed to have a 4.0 in my last 2 years of undergrad and in my Masters. I was accepted this cycle which was my second try and first interview. If you can make it past the cutoffs for USask, which is reasonable if you're IP, then you'll have a decent chance if you rock your interview! If you're OOP then you will need to take some extra time to bring up that GPA and make sure you ace the MCAT... but like skmed257 said above, if this is your dream then you can definitely go for it!!

  8. Status: Accepted!!!!! 1st quartile IP - Regina

    Time Stamp: June 3, 2020

GPA: No idea! I did my undergrad at 2 schools with an 87 GPA at one and only letter grades at the other with one year where I had both a D and a W on my transcript, and I have a 91 GPA in my Masters. So I would guess somewhere in the 80's :)

    MCAT Score: 505

    Location: IP

I honestly felt like crap after my interview so I'm so excited to be able to make this post!!! This was my 2nd year applying so please never give up. I'll be requesting a deferral of my seat since I'm not quite finished my Masters yet so hopefully this means good news for someone else on the waitlist.

I posted this in the other thread as well but I thought I'd post it here as well. My OOP 3rd quartile email says that due to the uncertainty I should make alternative plans. Does the OOP 2nd quartile wait list email say the same thing?

I don't know about OOP, but my IP first quartile says the same thing!

In province also waitlisted 1st quartile. Rollercoaster indeed!
trying to see how much Waitlist moved last few years but not really getting a clear picture...

I know a couple of IP applicants who got in off the wait list in mid-June in the past couple of years but I also don't have a clear picture. Regardless, I'm sure we won't see much, if any, movement until after the deadline to accept for the first round of offers. Such an emotional rollercoaster
