  6. Hello everyone I need help choosing a university that will offer me better opportunities for grad schools. I'm hearing so much different things from everywhere, so I thought i'd ask here. I was wondering which program/university of these would be better for med school in terms of networking, opportunities (research/volunteer/clubs), gpa? They both seem to have their pros and cons, but I am stuck between them. Thank you so much, in advance! ---- Both will cost the same for me in the long run and I'm going to have to get some part-time jobs near the universities to help me pay for tuition and bus fees. General: do researchers care about which university you go to when you apply to do research with them? (i.e. is prestige worth something?) ----- uOttawa: -health science seems to be helpful in terms of the gpa aspect -biomed seems to fill more prerequisites -i need to know more because not many people talk about it—why? UofT life sciences: -utsc: smaller class sizes but smaller campus and not all courses would be here, but seems to be better for high gpa than utsg -utsg: more opportunities than utsc -overall hard (but aren’t all universities hard? So how does this difficulty compare to mcmaster for example? Are the profs purposefully making tests harder, do they not teach well so the self learn is getting to people, is curving down a thing?)
  7. I got into honours health sciences at uottawa, western science (major in biology) and health sciences kinesiology. I eventually want to pursue a career in medicine, so I was wondering if anyone can rank those three schools and programs and see which one will be the best pathway to get into medicine.

  9. Fall 2019 I will be starting an Honours B.A in Psychology at UOttawa and plan on studying in medicine, completing all my science prerequisites. I know that there isn't a specific degree for medical school but every now and then I worry. Is it really a problem? Should I make the program change(if I can)? Did you or do you know anyone who has gotten into medical school with my degree? sincerely, a (slightly) worried pre-med student
  10. Hey guys, does anyone have any insight on how the top 3 activities of each section will be used? Will these be the only activities screened pre-interview, and used to allocate interviews? Any insight is welcomed thanks!
  11. Hi everyone, I applied to uOttawa this year and thankfully got an interview. However, IF I get accepted , I will need to have completed a pre-req from Athabasca University before June 30th to send my transcript to OMSAS. I was planning on doing my midterm and final exams in the upcoming months, but since all universities in my province have closed due to COVID-19 I will not be able to be invigilated (aka take my exams). Depending on how Athabasca deals witht the situation, I am unsure if I will be able to finish my pre-req before the OMSAS deadline. I know that everything is extremely uncertain at the moment, but does anyone have any idea of how pre-reqs will be handled by med schools in the event that unforeseeable circumstances like this one make it impossible for us to finish them before the deadline or, even worse, entering med school in the fall? Hope everyone is safe!
  12. Hi everyone, I will be applying to the French stream at uOttawa this year (Social Accountability Initiative). For the OMSAS application, do I need to complete it in french? Do you know where can I attach the financial documentation necessary for the Social Accountability Initiative? Also, I come from a single-parent household. Do I need to write an explanatory letter as to why I am only including my single-parent's financial documentation? Thanks for your help!
  13. Hey! Did anyone apply through the CNFS or applied in previous years and got in?
  14. Hi everyone, I am currently a second year student at UOttawa in Biomedical sciences. My GPA for first year was very low due to mental health reasons, in fact, it was so low that I was put on academic suspension for second year. In my school, you can still take classes while you're on academic suspension, but they count as "academic upgrading" classes. So far, I am doing really well in my classes, I've gotten A+'s on all of my midterms. Assuming the best, assuming I get a 4.0 in every single class for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year, and end up with a 3.8+ GPA (repeating the classes I didn't do well in in the summer to replace the grades) do I still have a chance in getting into UofT's med school? I am doing many extracurriculars, doctor shadowing, and plan on doing some research work as well. Is my academic suspension/withdrawal going to be visible on my transcript? If it is, is it completely impossible to get into med school with it on my transcript, even if I get a very high GPA, very high MCAT score and many extracurriculars?
  15. Hi, I'm applying to the French stream at uOttawa this coming semester. Is anyone willing to look over my ABS (in french) in the next few days please? Thank you!
  16. Hi, I requested my transcript from uOttawa using OMSAS but it says I cannot see the status of my request until I have submitted my application. Say I submit my application on October 1st, how would I be sure that uOttawa has sent the transcripts to OMSAS?? Does uOttawa even send the transcript before I submit my OMSAS application? Thank you,
  17. Hi! I recently asked a prof (by email) to write me a reference letter for my med school application. They agreed but also asked what aspects I wanted them to emphasize in the letter. It’s my first time applying and I have no clue what that means. I thought the prof would know better than me what to focus on (because they can tell what I’m good at?). I don’t want to say « i don’t know » because that sounds bad to me. Does anyone know how to respond to them? Any advice is greatly appreciated. —— Also, for the reference letter, do I just contact the referee through OMSAS (once they agree)? Is It an actual letter or just a form they have to fill in? Thanks!
  18. Hi, I'm a 4th year biomed student at the university of Ottawa. My questions are: - Does NOSM use a weighted GPA system? Or is just my cGPA? - Is there a difference between the English and French applicants like there is at uOttawa? Thanks
  19. Hi, So I'm applying to med school this fall and I'm a bit confused about the OMSAS application. For each activity, I have to enter the number of hours but is that hours/week? or hours/month? or total hours? uOttawa specifies that it can be either hours/week or hours/month? But what if I'm applying to different schools at a time? When I'm doing my app do I have to specify which it is? Thanks in advance
  20. I'm about to go into my 4th in biomedical science at uOttawa and I'm in a French extended program. Here's my info: - 1st year GPA: 3.3 2nd year GPA: 3.9 3rd year GPA: 3.86 wGPA with OMSAS: 3.81 - Applying to the French stream at uOttawa and NOSM - EC's: French/English tutor, pianist at a church, choir, band, physiotherapy clerk, volunteered at a hospital, piano teacher at elementary school, private tutor (very brief), Sunday lesson teacher for kids, president/founder of a club and VP of another, etc. - I live in Ottawa A lot of my EC's are centered around music and tutoring. I don't have 32+ entries like most people and honestly, I feel like my GPA is quite mediocre for med school. I am going to try my hardest to raise it in my 4th year and then write the MCAT (so I can apply to more schools if uOttawa doesn't work out). But, right now what are my chances of even getting an interview? Thanks a lot in advance!

  22. Hi everyone, I'm from and living in the Gatineau region and I want to know what's a competitive gpa for the french stream at uOttawa ? My current gpa is 3.76 with pretty solid ec's ! Is it worth the try ? Thanks a lot !!
  23. Hey there, I’m a grade 12 student and I’m indecisive on what program to choose at uOttawa: Biomed or Biopharm. My future aspirations are to have a career in the medical field so maintaining a good GPA would be crucial for me. I feel Biomed would be better for a course for me as it has more prerequisites for med school, but i think that doing COOP would boost my application for med school for the other activities they look at. If biomed had COOP I would have chosen it but the program I applied to didn’t. I was wondering should I take biopharm with coop and do the prerequisites for med school as electives or choose biomed. Also, is it possible to switch into a coop program of the same program? Thank you for any input !
  24. Hi, I'm applying to uottawa med school this year, but as I'm studying in NB and enrolled in a french university I'm considered in the CNSF french stream. Has anyone been down this path and if so do I have a chance?
