Hi everyone, I will be applying to the French stream at uOttawa this year (Social Accountability Initiative). For the OMSAS application, do I need to complete it in french? Do you know where can I attach the financial documentation necessary for the Social Accountability Initiative? Also, I come from a single-parent household (my other parent has inconsistently paid child support throughout my life). Do I need to write an explanatory letter as to why I am only including my single-parent's financial documentation? Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone, I am currently a second year student at UOttawa in Biomedical sciences. My GPA for first year was very low due to mental health reasons, in fact, it was so low that I was put on academic suspension for second year. In my school, you can still take classes while you're on academic suspension, but they count as "academic upgrading" classes. So far, I am doing really well in my classes, I've gotten A+'s on all of my midterms. Assuming the best, assuming I get a 4.0 in every single class for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year, and end up with a 3.8+ GPA (repeating the classes I didn't do well in in the summer to replace the grades) do I still have a chance in getting into UofT's med school? I am doing many extracurriculars, doctor shadowing, and plan on doing some research work as well. Is my academic suspension/withdrawal going to be visible on my transcript? If it is, is it completely impossible to get into med school with it on my transcript, even if I get a very high GPA, very high MCAT score and many extracurriculars?

Hi, I'm applying to the French stream at uOttawa this coming semester. Is anyone willing to look over my ABS (in french) in the next few days please? Thank you!

Hi, I requested my transcript from uOttawa using OMSAS but it says I cannot see the status of my request until I have submitted my application. Say I submit my application on October 1st, how would I be sure that uOttawa has sent the transcripts to OMSAS?? Does uOttawa even send the transcript before I submit my OMSAS application? Thank you,

Hi! I recently asked a prof (by email) to write me a reference letter for my med school application. They agreed but also asked what aspects I wanted them to emphasize in the letter. It’s my first time applying and I have no clue what that means. I thought the prof would know better than me what to focus on (because they can tell what I’m good at?). I don’t want to say « i don’t know » because that sounds bad to me. Does anyone know how to respond to them? Any advice is greatly appreciated. —— Also, for the reference letter, do I just contact the referee through OMSAS (once they agree)? Is It an actual letter or just a form they have to fill in? Thanks!

Hi, I'm a 4th year biomed student at the university of Ottawa. My questions are: - Does NOSM use a weighted GPA system? Or is just my cGPA? - Is there a difference between the English and French applicants like there is at uOttawa? Thanks

Hi, So I'm applying to med school this fall and I'm a bit confused about the OMSAS application. For each activity, I have to enter the number of hours but is that hours/week? or hours/month? or total hours? uOttawa specifies that it can be either hours/week or hours/month? But what if I'm applying to different schools at a time? When I'm doing my app do I have to specify which it is? Thanks in advance

I'm about to go into my 4th in biomedical science at uOttawa and I'm in a French extended program. Here's my info: - 1st year GPA: 3.3 2nd year GPA: 3.9 3rd year GPA: 3.86 wGPA with OMSAS: 3.81 - Applying to the French stream at uOttawa and NOSM - EC's: French/English tutor, pianist at a church, choir, band, physiotherapy clerk, volunteered at a hospital, piano teacher at elementary school, private tutor (very brief), Sunday lesson teacher for kids, president/founder of a club and VP of another, etc. - I live in Ottawa A lot of my EC's are centered around music and tutoring. I don't have 32+ entries like most people and honestly, I feel like my GPA is quite mediocre for med school. I am going to try my hardest to raise it in my 4th year and then write the MCAT (so I can apply to more schools if uOttawa doesn't work out). But, right now what are my chances of even getting an interview? Thanks a lot in advance!

Hey there, I’m a grade 12 student and I’m indecisive on what program to choose at uOttawa: Biomed or Biopharm. My future aspirations are to have a career in the medical field so maintaining a good GPA would be crucial for me. I feel Biomed would be better for a course for me as it has more prerequisites for med school, but i think that doing COOP would boost my application for med school for the other activities they look at. If biomed had COOP I would have chosen it but the program I applied to didn’t. I was wondering should I take biopharm with coop and do the prerequisites for med school as electives or choose biomed. Also, is it possible to switch into a coop program of the same program? Thank you for any input !

B.A in Psychology into medicine?
studiesbyjenn posted a topic in University of Ottawa Medical School
Fall 2019 I will be starting an Honours B.A in Psychology at UOttawa and plan on studying in medicine, completing all my science prerequisites. I know that there isn't a specific degree for medical school but every now and then I worry. Is it really a problem? Should I make the program change(if I can)? Did you or do you know anyone who has gotten into medical school with my degree? sincerely, a (slightly) worried pre-med student- 4 replies

Hey guys, I'm about to finish CEGEP soon and I'm still very confused about the path i'm supposed to follow in order to get in medschool since i'm from Quebec! I even spoke to Diane Parent . She told me that all i needed was to get the right Wgpa in my pre-requires courses to get in. But now i'm reading what you guys wrote here and i'm lost.. haha can i just do my pre-requires and apply as an undergrad at Uottawa? Or do I have to go get a BAC frst? thanks

Wondering if anyone received an email from University of Ottawa (French or English stream) acknowledging receipt of their application? It's my first year applying to their medical program, but third year applying via OMSAS (McMaster and NOSM) and I've always received an email from the individual schools acknowledging my application, in addition to the confirmation email from OMSAS. I received emails from McMaster and NOSM in December, but nothing from Ottawa... Is this normal? Do they simply do things differently? Or should I be contacting them to make sure there hasn't been an issue? Thanks in advance!

Hey all, here's the thing. I've been accepted into UOttawa's Biology (BSc), Health Sciecne (BHSc), and Biomedical Science (BSc) and I'm struggling to decide which of these programs I should go for. Anyone faced this dilemma before? Does one degree stand out over the rest or could Med schools care less about what the degree is and just look at the GPA? I'm into most of the courses in BioMed but really dont want to take physics or calculus. Biology is pretty basic and 3rd/4th year are basically all electives so very customizable (but BIOLOGY just sounds really general and doesn't have the ring BioMed does lol). Health Science is a wild card as it all seems ok (not really interested in all the socialogy and physcology involved in that) but its BHSc so it might narrow my path if Med school doesn't pan out. I really like anatomy and tangable things and less into pure sciences and math. Any thoughts on this matter? Cheers, Richard

Hi there, new to the forum. I'm currently in grade 12 and starting to apply to university. My longterm goal would be to get into University of Toronto or McMaster medical school. So the question is: Does the undergraduate school you do to matter in terms of Medical school acceptance? I know this topic has been discussed before but wanted to know if anything has changed. I currently live in Toronto and want to get away for undergrad and explore somewhere new like Ottawa or Northern Ontario (don't ask me why lol). Would going to schools like Uottawa or Northern Ontario which are ranked 10th or less in Canada hinder my chances in the longrun? I've been browsing through the medical schools websites and the only thing that scares me a little is that very few people from smaller universities get accepted. Lets say I get a 3.8 GPA at UOttawa, would that be "equal" to a 3.8 at McMaster/Western in the eyes of the med school? (given program (biomed), extracirriculars and LORs are the same) Would appreciate any advice on this matter, Thanks!

Looking at the current year stats, almost half of the University of Toronto Medical school's 2018 students are from McMaster. Is there a reason for this? Also, for students who got accepted, what did you do for undergrad; life or health science? Cheers, Victor

Just wanting some insight on UOttawa as an undergraduate school for BioMed/Health Science. So I've got a few questions for people who have attended: 1. How is the campus? (I've heard people say its really ugly and that lecture halls/equipment are old/poor funding) 2. How good is the medical student community? (Support from people going through premed/mcat/etc) 3. How is it for someone who doesn't speak French? (I've heard it can be a little difficult becuase they focus a lot on French and that some Professors may have heavy french accents lol) 4. Would you suggest BioMed or Health science for undergrad in terms of useful knowledge to build a foundation for Med school or the MCAT (Is Coop any good for these programs?) 5. Why is UOttawa ranked so low in terms of good universities/student satisfaction? For such a big name as "UOttawa" is seems to be hovering at Ryerson/York/Guelph level instead of Queens/Western level) I know thats a lot of questions but would appreciate any input, Thanks in advance!

Hey guys, I'm thinking of applying to UOttawa med this year- I just wanted to know; what is the cut-off for the wGPA for anglophone applicants? On their site it says you can email and ask, but the lady won't be back till october 1st (how convenient). Did anyone manage to email this year? I don't wanna assume it's the same as previous years. Thanks!

Hi all! Sorry to bother you with the usual "what are my chances" question! I am going onto the 4th year of my undergrad and I plan on applying to UOttawa. I am bilingual so I'm struggling as to which stream I should apply to. Assuming I calculated it correctly, my cGPA is 3.95. I read on previous posts that the French stream is less competitive in terms of getting an interview invite and, to be quite honest, that's why I'm leaning towards applying in that stream. However, although I am bilingual I definitely feel like I express myself a lot better in English (so I feel like my CASPER in English would be a lot better) and I feel like I would do better on an English interview vs. a French one. From last years interviews/regrets I saw that those in the lower 90s for GPA didn't get an English invite (and then there would be some cases where they did) so I'm not sure if I stand a chance getting an English invite with my GPA (I realize it's hard to tell without having written the CASPER)? Any advice/help would be much appreciated!

I have a question regarding eligibility for Ottawa. Here are my course load/ year so far: Year 1: 8 courses = 4.0 credits/FCE year 2: 9 courses = 4.5 credits/ FCE year 3: 10 courses = 5.0 credits/FCE currently taking a summer course. Will that qualify for 3 years of full time studies or 2? I am planning my courses for my 4th year and am deciding wether or not to overload to make all 4 years count in the event I am not granted an interview invite this cycle. If they do I will not need to over load. Thanks in advance for the help!
