  1. Hey everyone, So I'm planning to apply to US med schools this summer, and I want to apply as early as possible. I'm fine with using my current mcat score, but my cars is a little low (127) so I wanted to rewrite and improve cars before applying to canadian schools. Would I be allowed to submit my us applications without indicating that I'm planning to rewrite, and then rewrite sometime in august before my canadian apps? I'm worried that they'll find out that i re-wrote the test, and disqualify me for not updating my application
  2. Hey everyone, So it's my first time considering applying to American schools and I was hoping someone would be able to share some info about MSU. From what I can see, it looks as though they are relatively Canadian friendly, as anyone who is a Canadian citizen can apply with full consideration given to degrees obtained in Canada. However based on their admission statistics on MSAR, they only accepted 3 from 500 international applicants. Seeing as how MSU doesn't accept non-US citizens, non-US residents or non-Canadian citizens, does that mean in this case Canadians were considered international? Or were they considered out of state? Just figured I'd post on here before emailing them to see if I could get a quick response. Any info anyone might have would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  3. I have to provide 3 references for OMSAS and I have 4 to choose from: 1. A professor I published a paper with, over 2 weeks of 12-hour days of field and lab research in undergrad, who likes me but had admittedly little face to face time. Fish physiological research, 3rd author. 2. My volunteer coordinator at the local hospital, 140 hours, 2 years, just loves me, and has very high praise from the head nurses of the wards I've volunteered in. 3. A program coordinator and technician who teaches an entomology field research course I attended. Field research, 2 weeks, 2 other courses with him. Easily my #1 fan, would be a spectacular reference with high praise, but not a professor. 4. My graduate thesis supervisor. Medical science, diabetes and atherosclerosis. Just an amazing guy but I don't think he likes me very much. Its been an unusually hard year, I've struggled with family issues, anxiety and depression and as a result I've performed uncharacteristically poorly. Missing days without notice, coming in late, slow pace of research. He has every right to be annoyed. The lab, colleagues and supervisor have all been spectacular, but I've just really struggled to make a good impression with everything going on. I've spoken to him several times to check in and while he was pleased with my progress until recently, in the last two months he's seemed pretty frustrated. I've proactively apologized for missing days but haven't told him about the anxiety and depression. Anyway, TLDR: my supervisor and I have a complicated relationship. Would it be better to use references 1,2, and 3? Would it hurt if I didn't include him? (I know UofT required him as a reference, but I'm asking mostly for other schools)
  4. Hey everyone, Since Queens changed their grading scales in 2011, I was wondering if someone who went to Queens and submitted an application to AMCAS or AACOMAS could tell me how AMCAS/AACOMAS converts Queen's U, letter grades i.e. what would an A- be, an A, a B+, B, B-, etc. Thanks
  5. Hi everyone, I've been hearing some mixed things on how YorkU grades are being converted for American Med Schools. I've always heard that an A at York (3.8 OMSAS) is a 4.0 when converted to AMCAS. I've also heard that a B+ (3.3 at York) is a 3.5 when converted. I've read both of these things on these forums. However, when checking the AMCAS site, although, nothing perfectly fits York's Grade Scale, I think an A may actually be a 3.7. Can a recent applicant from YorkU please comment on how their grades were converted when applying? Please and thank you!
  6. Hi all, I'm currently in second year of University of Guelph and I want to apply to US Med Schools but I'm very confused about how they calculate the AMCAS GPA according to this guide: https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fastly.net/production/media/filer_public/10/ab/10ab9407-7134-4477-9fc9-140d8acb35af/amcas_grade_conversion_guide.pdf First of all, I cannot find a matching scale for Guelph Grading system as we have 85%-100% as A. However, the closest scale on that table the first row of percentage scale. How do I go about that? Secondly, Guelph is semester based. Each course in our school normally worth 0.5 credit, occasionally 1.0 credit. I read somewhere online that a school can only be either quarter hour system or semester hour system, so would Guelph be considered as a semester hour system? How do you actually calculate semester hour since our courses only give us the credit we earn? (P.S. Our school website did tell us how to calculate credit hour though, I don't know if that helps?) If someone could answer my questions that would be very much appreciated!! Thank you in advance!
  7. I was wondering if my Letter-Writers will be given the list of schools to which I am applying. I generally wouldn't have a problem with them looking at the list. However, there is one school to which I'm applying just as the sort of dreamer option. As such, I would be a bit embarrassed if they saw that I was applying there. Edit: spelling
  8. I'm planning on taking easier classes from now (beginning semester of third year) until my final semester of fourth year. Is this a good plan? I figure that this last semester will be the least important to adcoms. Is this right?
  9. As a Canadian student who has spent all of their time, research and effort applying to medical schools within Canada, I would like to know if anyone here could inform me if it is simply too late to apply within the American system? From what I understand, their system admission has a rolling admissions process beginning during the summer and going until late fall, and that I would be at a significant disadvantage now applying late as an international. Regardless, is it too late to apply within AMCAS now at this point? If anyone has some insight into this system or an answer I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you
  10. Hi guys, I am just curious, how many of you are also applying to US medical schools (MD/DO)?
  11. Hey everyone, I've submitted my primary and have gotten it verified, and also have my letters of recommendation marked as received. However, what I realized later is that these LORs explicitly need signatures and letter heads (some thing I did not mention to my writers). While some of them have experience using AMCAS, I don't think they all do. My question is, will I get a notification from AMCAS/any particular medical school when I attempt to submit my secondaries, that my letter of reference does not meet the requirements. At this point, I'm just assuming that one of my referees missed one of these requirements. Thanks
  12. Hey there everyone, I'm looking for people who have had experience applying to top-tier schools. There seem to be a bunch of schools like Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Feinberg etc. who have MCAT Matriculating Medians of 36/37(according to MSAR). My question is, has anyone who has applied to these top tiers with slightly lower MCATs gotten interviews? My list of potential schools would probably change a lot depending on this. So I guess to sum it up...Should I apply to as many of these top tiers as possible, or apply very selectively to them? Here are my stats for reference : 35 MCAT, AMCAS ~4.0 GPA, Avg ECs (research (no pubs), leadership in clubs, clinical exp, athletic clubs etc.) Thank you.
  13. First post here! I am finishing a bachelor of science in Kinesiology, BUT, the degree is within the faculty of education. Logically, I thought that Kinesiology courses would be science, but its not in the faculty of science. This is also a completely different degree to recreation and health education, which is also at our school, where students would take a bunch of sport courses like "Badminton" and they receive a bachelor of arts. In Kinesiology, we take cellular physiology, systemic physiology, exercise physiology, motor learning, motor control, functional anatomy, etc. In addition, it is a requirement to get into the Kinesiology program through completion of a year of chemistry, year of biology, and half a year of physics. So, if I were to get LORs from professors in Kinesiology, would this count towards the science letters since it is obviously science-intensive and is a bachelor of science, despite being in the faculty of education?
  14. Hi everyone, first time poster here. I have a few questions with AMCAS opening up soon. 1. The AMCAS app opens up May 5th. Does this mean I should tell my references to start sending in their letters after this day? OR, since the app can actually get submitted June 2nd, is this the date I should be aiming for? The reason I ask is that people seem to emphasize rolling admissions for American schools. 2. How does it work if I get accepted to both an American and Canadian school? I know American acceptances are way earlier on, so am I able to hold my spot down with a deposit, and essentially wait until May for Ontario acceptances? 3. What exactly are secondaries? If you get a secondary from a school, is that one step closer to getting an interview? Or does everyone who applies get a secondary? I've read the guide to applying to American schools before, but these are some of the questions that I couldn't find as definitive answers for. Thanks for the help.
  15. Hello, I want to attend a US medical school in Sept 2016. I am graduating right now and will likely be taking a year off. My cGPA from AMCAS is 3.93 and my science GPA is 4.00 My MCAT score is not bad overall, but I scored very low on VR... 11/8/15 = 34 What medical schools should I aim for? Anything I can do to increase my chances to get in? Also, what are the odds that I will get a number of interviews/acceptances? Thank you very much. Edit: EC include 3 club executive positions, 2 summers volunteering in clinic, 2 summers of research volunteer, VP of medical mission trip, and this summer I will be teaching MCAT for a prep company
