  1. Hey everyone, I recently received my QE1 score back and was shocked to receive a score of 233 (30th percentile). I have lots of elective experience (Urban FM, Rural FM, Respiratory Sub-I, Outpatient Cardiology, Outpatient General Internal Medicine in high risk groups, virtual general surgery and virtual plastic surgery) despite covid, I am recent graduate from an Irish medical school (class standing okay but nothing impressive), my other Canadian Board (NAC OSCE) was a Pass with Superior Performance, and have multiple published research papers (none first author however). Ideally, I’d like to match into IM, but because of my score I’m not even sure if FM programs will look favourably at me. I was wondering what other Canadian IMG applicants or current residents thought honestly of my chances of matching to any program in the country. Any input or advice to improve my application would be so helpful, not only to me but maybe other IMGs in a similar position as me. Thank you
  2. There was a post comparing the different psych residencies across the country a few years ago. Can anyone chime in (pros and cons in terms of call, culture, exposure) to help with my ROL? I am considering staying in Ontario (where family is) or moving to Quebec (McGill) but the significantly lower pay in Quebec is putting me off.
  3. Wishing you the very best of luck in your CARMS journey! Do not be discouraged about not getting all the interviews you wanted. Definately do not be dissapointed if you thought the interview was tough or didn't go your way - it is tough for all not only you. May your hard work and commitment be rewarded with the perfect match for your residency. Trust in the journey you've embarked upon, as stressful and grueling as it may be, and it will lead you to a fulfilling and impactful career of your choice in medicine. Best of luck to each and every one of you – the future of healthcare is brighter because of individuals like you. Hello, (francais plus bas) We invite you to take 5 minutes (even if you are not applying -M1,2,3 - you will be our comparison group) in our online research project questionnaire to assess anxiety related to the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). Your contribution is valuable and responses will be strictly confidential, with no specific risks involved. Objectives The aim of this project is to assess the anxiety generated by the application process for CaRMS (Canadian Resident Matching Service). We aim to collect data to gain a better understanding of the effects of this process on individuals. You will be invited to complete an online questionnaire focusing on the anxiety caused by CaRMS during the application process. The questionnaire is expected to take approximately 5 minutes of your time.
  4. I applied to internal pretty broadly but really undecided on ranking and feel like I don't know a lot of the programs well. I have a non-medicine partner who is able to move wherever I end up, and we have family pretty scattered across the country, so am pretty open to going to most programs. I'm a UofT student so pretty familiar with the program here, but otherwise don't feel like I have enough info at other places to make a decision. I was hoping people could provide some pros/cons about the programs they know well? This is kinda what I have so far: UofT: Pros: Research, fellowship options, decent service/teaching ratio, night float model R2/R3 Cons: More learners so less opportunities (most go to fellows), variable control over where in the city you'll end up, large program so less interaction/support for PD/staff Queens: Pros: Supportive program, procedural opportunities earlier, good service/teaching ratio, night float model R2/R3 Cons: Less fellowship opportunities, less intense research, small city McMaster: Pros: Supportive program/PD responsive to change, good fellowship options, good research, night float model R2/R3 Cons: Heavier service to teaching ratio, a lot of changes recently Ottawa: Pros: Supportive program/PD, good fellowship options, good research Cons: Heavy on service, no night float model R2/R3 UBC: Pros: Good teaching, good fellowship/research Cons: More learners so less opportunities, no night float model R2/R3, less interaction/support from PD/Staff If anyone has anything to add or change (this is mostly just what I understood from info sessions so could be wrong) or insights into other programs (Calgary, Western, Dal, McGill), would really appreciate it!
  5. Did anyone else find it difficult to secure interviews for radiology this year? I personally ended up with a lower number of interviews than I had hoped for and I am curious to hear about others' experiences. Compared to last year, most of my seniors that applied got majority of the schools they had applied to. For some context: I applied to 12 programs, and received 4 interviews. I am cognizant of the fact that radiology is highly competitive. While my application may not have been the strongest, I did not think it was weak either. When I received feedback from radiology residents/mentors on my CV and personal letters, they all gave really positive feedback. My references also assured me strong letters, with 2/3 even offering me a letter in the first place. The only significant drawback on my application was my horrible score on CaSPER (lowest quartile), which I was forced to write while I was super sick. Tbh, I think this may have been one of the biggest factors.
  6. hello all med residents and med students! i was wondering how difficult is it to get into thoracic surgery ? what gpa should i keep throughout med school to be competitive ? any other tips ?
  7. I'm weighing three options. One is significantly less costly, all international as I'm living internationally but I would like to return home to Canada in the future. Does CaRMS consider which school you went to when matching? Will my choice of school impact my chances of matching in any way?
  8. I didn't match in a surgical speciality and radiation oncology. There have been many applicants to these programs this year. No position remaining available for example in radiation oncology across Canada. I already have a master degree. What are the best options to improve my application for the next year? Thank you for your suggestions.
  9. should lose access to CaRMS the following year. I don't care if you don't want to train less preferred applicants, if you aren't matching your top choices it's because your program isn't attractive in the first place and you have no right to be picky. t. CaRMS guy ->
  10. I'm Chris, a PGY-1 in Nova Scotia. My website, Ultimate Premed Package, is a completely free website that is mostly aimed at helping premeds with their medical scohol applications, however, I recently just uploaded all of my interview prep materials here for applying to FM residencies in Canada. You may find some of the information helpful, so feel free to take a look through! I ask for nothing in return, and I'm always open to feedback and suggestions so please let me know All the best and good luck with CaRMS!
  11. A program I applied to had interview invites come out per the tracker, but I did not hear back yet. Does this mean I should expect rejections?? This happened with another program last week where I got an invite one day and later my friend got rejected. Is there any hope that I will be invited to this program or should I brace for rejection if I was not in the first wave? Anyone have anecdotes? Thankssssss!!!!!
  12. Hello! I've been researching about some doubts I have about the residency application / match in Canada and couldn't fully answer some of them due to the mixed info on the net. So, applying to multiple specialties will make it harder for me to get a match? Due to such practice being "ill seen", as the programs would not want an "undecided" candidate. What would be the best approach or strategy to increase the chance of a match? My best regards
  13. Hi, I would really appreciate your help and advice. As the title suggests, I am having trouble ranking psych vs FM programs. So far my thoughts are: Psych: Pros: I really enjoy studying Psych and was fascinated during the few psych cases I saw on my primary care rotations. Love taking long detailed histories and having long interactions with patients. Can see myself loving Child and Adolescent psych. Cons: Because of COVID my placements were all virtual/ phone-based, so I did not get a realistic feel and committing to a 5-year program is scary. I am an IMG so I will need to do 5 years of residency PLUS 5 years ROS. Again as I am an IMG, had no exposure to psych in electives. FM: Pros: I found that though FM is very general, you still see a good amount of stable patients with mental health issues. 2 years is amazing! ROS will be shorter - year for year so I'll be done both my residency and ROS in 4 years. Cons: don't like the huge variety of cases, If I were to go into FM I want to mainly see patients with psych issues, idk how achievable that is.. Did an observership with 2 family physicians in Canada, they complained so much about unfair compensation from the government, paperwork, not having as much time with patients because of the paperwork, getting no respect from specialists, nurse practitioners etc. I am already considering things like location and program highlights/ electives. Are there any other factors I should think about before deciding how to rank them? Any advice will be appreciated! My understanding is that money wise both FM and Psych are very similar. Any insight on enhanced skills in Addictions/ or a fellowship in child and adolescent, on how they would affect lifestyle, salary, etc. would be appreciated.

  16. Hey everyone, I'm a current 4th year student who will be applying to both radiology and IM and wanted people's opinion regarding reference letters. For context, I have 1 radiology and 4 IM letters so far. 1. I've read that specific letters are preferred over general ones, but in my case I'll be using my IM letters for both radiology and IM. Should I ask my IM referees to write a general letter or a specific letter for IM? 2. How preferable is it to submit a letter that's specific for IM to radiology? Since it's hard to get strong radiology letters on electives, I hear it's quite common that applicants use letters from other specialties. 3. Does general vs. specific letters differ significantly, if I ask my referee to comment on the same skills and qualities? Thank you!
  17. Hey fellow premed101 users, I’m currently a second year med student and have discovered my love for neurology! I love doing the neuro exam and working neuro patients up and the consultant work is always very interesting! I have my heart set on either an adult or Pediatric neurology residency, however I’m also very anxious about matching and unfortunately most provincial governments seem to be pushing family medicine and not specialty programs so it might be even harder to match by the time I go through Carms. I was wondering what I can do to increase my chances other then the run of the mill research/electives/good letters? Would a MSc be very beneficial (in neuro)? For reference, I’m bilingual so I was planning on applying broadly to all the adult neuro + child neuro programs (around 22 programs in total). Would this be sufficient or should I back up with another program in addition? I don’t really enjoy any other programs, other then maybe psych through which I could do neuropsych? But then again psych is quite competitive too… I was also wondering if there would be any way to be strategic with my electives to increase my chances. I’m flexible on location, so maybe I can focus on doing electives in areas/programs that in the past had leftover spots - since if I get ranked highly by them I have a great shot? I would also love to chat with à neuro resident/attending if any frequent premed101! -An anxious M2
  18. Hey I’m an incoming first year to University of Montreal! I’m curious about the competitiveness of neurology, since it’s one of the fields I’m interested in. I was planning to apply to English Canada + Quebec. Do you need tons of research and ECs? Or does an average student with electives in the field and decent evaluations have a good chance? thanks!

  20. Hey guys, I’m an Université de Montréal medical student and I have my mind set on internal medicine. I always heard it was fairly uncompetitive due to the large number of spots/programs, but apparently for the last couple of years it’s been really hard to get into. This is really disappointing since I didn’t really want to apply to FM (just all out IM -broadly). I was wondering if you guys know 1. If it’s still an option to only apply IM and be pretty safe in terms of Carms. 2. How to become competitive? Particularly research, which isn’t an area I’m really experienced in. Would a lot of research really help secure a spot? Are extracurriculars really important? Or do they just want good clinical grades/Letters? 3. Is Quebec different? I’m bilingual but have a preference for staying in Quebec or Ottawa/Moncton because of the French opportunities there. I would apply to both French and English across the country though to increase my chances. Savez-vous si les programmes de médecine interne au Québec recherchent des étudiants ayant fait beaucoup de recherche?

  23. Hi everyone :) I'm a student from one of the prairies schools applying to IM this cycle. i was lucky to get some interviews including uoft and ubc (my top choices). I've never been to vancouver or toronto but I heard things about each city from residents. I really want to move out of the prairie for this next chapter of my life but im having a hard time deciding between these two schools in terms of ranking. Could you guys share anything you know about each program? I heard that uoft is notorious for being service heavy and not too collegial - but I also heard that it's easier to get into uoft sub-speciality if you do your residency there. Not too familiar about UBC but apparently it's service heavy too. Also the match rate for its residents was really bad this year..yikes Thnx!
  24. Hello all, With the logistical nightmare of scheduling all our interviews, I thought it would be useful to start an interview trade thread! To start off, I have a Dalhousie Psychiatry Interview on March 11, 2021 and am looking to switch to a later date (any other date works)!
