  2. Wondering if anyone has done or heard anything about ICU electives at St.Paul's? I'm looking to do it in my 4th year elective and just wondering what people thought about the rotation
  3. I'm wondering if anyone had any advice to give or information on potentially transferring between Canadian medical schools for clerkship. To my understanding, some schools accept full transfers into their program starting in 3rd year (for 4 year programs) and others, while not allowing full transfers, will allow students to do core clinical rotations at their centre during their clerkship (so they still get their degree from their initial institution). I ask because I'm getting married this coming summer and I would like to be closer to my spouse who is fixed in Montreal. Ideally I'd like to be within a few hours drive of Montreal, but just about any Ontario school will work. Thanks!

  13. Hi everyone, I was thinking about whether or not I should be moving out from the west-island for Med3 &4. Could someone tell me how are the schedules during clerkship years? I know it all depends on the specialty and all, but generally, do you expect to be on call for some rotations? Are there scenarios where you would finish after midnight or start during the night? Also, in med4, how many weeks/months a general student would go out of Montreal to do some electives elsewhere? If it helps, I am trying to go towards internal medicine.
  14. I'm hoping to get some advice on how the McGill and Ottawa programs compare. I've already made my decision about which city I'd prefer to live in, how the costs compare etc., but I would really appreciate the inside scoop on the programs themselves. I've heard through some students that Ottawa is extremely supportive, even through clerkship no matter what issues arise, and that McGill might not make as many allowances. I've also heard that the over-worked healthcare system in Quebec has a trickle-down effect leading to med students being expected to do a lot more (take on more patients, learn fast, sink or swim...) in clerkship compared to other schools. Are these fair assumptions? Is there anything else major that I should be considering when looking purely at the programs?

  16. TORONTO-SEEKING ROOMMATE! Doing my clerkship and have an extra room. House in Kensington Market STEPS FROM Toronto Western Hospital 64 Wales Avenue, Toronto, ON, Canada www.MEDShousing.com Listing ID #0007100 Roommate wanted to occupy the third bedroom in a semi-detached home in Kensington Market. The house is quite literally steps away from Toronto Western Hospital, as well as the UHN shuttle, which connects TWH to the other UHN sites (shuttle runs 6AM-8PM every 15 minutes on weekdays). The house is well connected to the Dundas and Bathurst streetcars. With all that Kensington Market has to offer a minute away, as well as the more sublime Queen Street West, you needn’t go far to find what you need – talk about prime location! Even though we’re close to the hospital the house is quite silent! The house was very recently renovated. It has a finished basement, a very open concept main floor, three bedrooms on the second floor, a backyard patio and barbecue as well as two complete washrooms. Laundry in the basement. The house has central gas and AC. Looking for a professional resident who is responsible. I am a medical student starting my clerkship at UofT in October. Flexible about when you can sign the lease – but the lease period goes from July 1, 2016 to June 29, 2017 with the option to renew for the following year. Feel free to contact me through MEDShousing.com listing #0007100
  17. Trying to be realistic here in creating a budget for 4th year. I've heard horror stories of people travelling all over the country spending tens of thousands of dollars, but also of people who stayed home the whole time and spent nothing. So, I'm aware that there is huge variability depending on where you choose to do your electives, combined with the length of your CaRMS tour, but I was wondering if any residents or current 4th years can shed some light on the costs associated with their last year? Do the extra costs (electives/CaRMS) make that much of a difference when compared to your budget for every other year?

  19. Hello, I am wondering what lifestyle looks like for family medicine students through medical school and residency. Up until recently, I thought the 80-hour/week, nights-on-call lifestyle was during residency only and that clerkship (3rd and 4th year) consisted of more "normal" hours hahah! I now realize this is a misconception and it sounds like at most Canadian med schools, 80 hours a week and night shifts start in 3rd year. Does this mean 4 years of sleep deprivation and excessive hours even for students going into family medicine? More people seem to be choosing the FM route because they want a more flexible schedule and a better work-life balance, but I am wondering how long it takes to actually achieve that. Two years of residency didn't seem so bad, but 4 years seems a little horrible. Unless it's not as bad as it sounds! Do you just "get used to it"? Is it possible to maintain a relationship or is it to the extent that you would only be seeing/socializing with family members 1 day a week? From Year 3 to PG2 do you get any weekends off and are there any extended periods of time or rotations with no call? I am specifically interested in UBC and how the work schedule, workload, and work-life balance is there. Thanks! (And I know there are already many threads asking similar questions).
  20. Hello! I was wondering if anybody has ever done the Basic Cancer Research and/or Translational Cancer Research elective at McGill that is advertised on the AFMC Student Portal. If so, how did you find it and would you recommend it? Can this elective be done for just 2 weeks? Based on my research experience, 2 weeks is absolutely nothing. Is it worth doing? Thanks!
