  1. Hi, I'm offering some help for students who are looking for advice on CARS, MMI/CASPER and application prep.. I'm a non-traditional applicant (no science background) who gained admission to my top medical school on my first application, with only one write of the MCAT. I'm willing to share some tips & tricks that made me successful in the process in a tutoring session. CASPER/MMI/APPLICATION SUPPORT I had a great CARS score and performed well on CASPER and the MMI.The secret to my success was the training I did to prepare myself psychologically and strategically for the application process. I am sure there are many great premed students who would be wonderful doctors but are failing again and again to be admitted into a program. It's not a lack of brains - it's a lack of strategy. In preparing for the MMI, CARS and CASPER, I developed an effective, efficient and reasonable strategy that allowed me to navigate the process successfully while working full-time. CARS TUTORING The CARS (verbal reasoning) section of the MCAT is a major stumbling block for many premed hopefuls. So many hardworking students find that their efforts are not translating into results and that one section stands between them and their dream of medical school The fact is that mastering CARS is an art and a science. Most students use a brute force approach which involves months of grueling repetition and ends in frustration. With the right strategy, approach and resources I scored a 130 (98th percentile) with only 3 weeks of preparation. I found the right approach and practiced it to perfection. I also used psychological techniques to train myself perform to my fullest on the exam. This is not my first experience with standardized testing. I also performed well enough on the LSAT to gain admission into the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. I spent years in law school and in corporate law refining my verbal reasoning and critical thinking skills under pressure. I understand how frustrating and difficult it can be to look for the right approach to CARS. However, my law training and LSAT work helped me quickly find the formula to ace CARS. Feel free to get in touch by private message if you are interested in help.
  2. Hey everyone! We are three physiotherapy students from McMaster University who have created both an instagram page and podcast to connect with students, physiotherapists and other health professionals! Our page serves as a place to update you all on our lives as we progress through our program, placements, and practice. We highlight many aspects of our daily student life while trying to give people advice on making it through the program! Please feel free to reach out to us for any questions about PT, McMaster, student life, etc.
  3. This question is for all current physio students- I have applied to quite a few physio programs this year and wanted to know how possible it is to qualify for a scholarship set aside for PT students? I have gone through a couple of websites and the number of scholarships available is pretty good when looking at the class-size. But I feel like current students would have a better idea of what it actually looks like. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Thanks
  4. Hi all, Given that Mac weighs an applicant's GPA and CARS score equally (33.33% each), how high should an applicant score to offset a lower GPA? (assuming Casper performance is average among those interviewed) Personally, I have a 3.29 cGPA from a competitive program with a strict grading curve (not engineering) . I simply wasn't passionate about the subject at times and unsure about what I really wanted to do after. What is the lowest cGPA that you have seen from an applicant invited to interview? I reason that if GPA and CARS are equally weighted, then they are pretty much interchangeable variables as far as interview invites go. If someone with a 3.8 cGPA and a 9 on the old VR could get an interview then couldn't another person with a 3.0 and a 13 or 14 on the old VR have similar odds of getting an invite? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Hey all, I've been thinking about all the things that matter the most when selecting the right medical school. Here's the list of questions that I have been considering, that I will revise: Which school best prepares you for residency? (CARMs data) What kind of learning style is emphasized at the school and does this suit you? (personal preference) Are there sufficient opportunities for observerships, research? "Sense of community". (every school I went to would boast about this. Felt like it was the same everywhere) Is there anything you would add to this? From the looks of it, the CARMs data doesn't really help discriminate between the various medical schools. Most schools have good years and bad years and the 2014 data at least showed that they're all pretty even in match rates. Overall match rates are 95%+ for every school. ---- Here are the numbers I was looking at: % of students who match to 1st choice program choice Western - 50% McMaster - 58% UofT - 61% Queens - 60% % of students who match to 1st choice discipline all schools between 92-94% CMGs Who Ranked Family Medicine as 1st Choice by School of Graduation Western - 40% McMaster - 40% UofT - 34% Queens - 23% !! (surprising) ---- If the stats are pretty even, then I'm assuming that which school you choose wouldn't affect how your career unfolds (please comment)! In that case, it would come down to a matter of personal preference. I don't care about the teaching style, I'm pretty flexible. I prefer to be close to home and a place where my engineer girlfriend can find work (Toronto or Hamilton). Thoughts??
  6. http://www.caspertest.com/casper-sample-questions/ Hello! I am really nervous for casper and am trying to prepare as much as possible (as my completely unexpected and abysmal physical score ruined my chances everywhere else *ouch*). To do so I started by reading some of doing right and trying the practice questions in the link above (using the 5 min limit). I was hoping some of you might be able to share your own answers so that I could have some way of assessing what I wrote. Particularity if you have reason to believe you scored well on capser previously. I would very much appreciate some feedback! If you don't feel comfortable posting here feel free to PM me. Any and all advice is also welcome. Thanks!
  7. Sorry if this is stupid question but I want to double check and triple check before submitting my application. I know that Mac states that they do not require details or verifiers. BUT when I see people posting about writing theirs out anyways 'just in case' it makes me a bit nervous.... My problem is that there IS no space for me to input 'extra' information.... My only option for explaining is the very short "Description" Bar (50 characters). So, for example, All I can fit is "Camp Councillor for Disadvantaged inner city kid" - which is both not 100% grammatically pretty and I wish I could say more/explain? Is the reason that I dont see any extra space to fill out that I am ONLY applying to Mac, and therefore the OMSAS system doesn't give me an option to fill out more? Or am I missing some glaringly obvious piece of the application?! o__0 Somebody please calm my nerves!
