  1. Hello, I know everyone must be tired of seeing these types of "what are my chances" posts but I could really use some advice. I am currently in my last year of my undergrad at UofC and eligible to graduate this spring. Unfortunately, med school has only become a dream of mine in the last year or so and my first two years GPA does not reflect this desire at all. Here is a breakdown: I have taken 5 courses each semester for my entire degree. GPA: 1st year: 2.73 2nd year: 3.02 3rd year: 3.61 4th year: 4.00 EC's Do pracitucms count for this? If so, I done extensive work in my community with local organizations working with individuals with disabilities. I have spent time at The Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured and done an internship at Emily follensbee (a school for children with multiple and complex learning needs). I have spent the last year working with the Government of Alberta creating and delivering a prevention presentation on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder that I have delivered to grade 8 and 11 classrooms as well as university classrooms. I have been lucky enough to have done a lot of traveling over the course of my degree (20 countries in three years), and I am in the process of planning a trip to Peru with a previous professor of mine to assist her with research as well as doing some volunteering. I have also been doing volunteering within the university and external organizations on my own time. I have been working one job for the past 4 years (just serving at a restaurant, so not very relevant). I do not have any publications at this point. My understanding is that UofC will use your three best years to count your GPA but even with dropping my first year that would leave me with a 3.54 which is not competitive. Any advice going forward? As I see it I have three options: 1. take a 5th or 6th year of my current degree 2. take a second undergrad 3. apply for grad school (although I feel like this would be the least useful) Any recommendations going forward would be very much appreciated!!! Thank you!
  2. APPLYING TO: U of C, U of A (and wherever else I meet the requirements) Forgive me for sounding clueless (I am). I’m a second year NESA (bachelor of nursing) student through the University of Lethbridge. I started clinicals in the hospital this year and the more I worked around doctors and surgeons, the more I realized how much more attracted to medicine I was than nursing. I started researching med and realized it wasn’t AS daunting as I always believed it to be, and now I have decided to *attempt* to get in to med school. My first year GPA was 3.78, my second year GPA is not as important because I am not a full time student this year. Next year will be the year I try to get my GPA as high as possible. It’s been hard to navigate the premed process in nursing as I appear to be the only student in my year that is planning to go to med school. Please help me! I volunteer for Canadian Blood Services 1x/week, planning on volunteering for another organization as soon as I can (either emergency room or safe consumption site). In nursing school, most of the classes are nursing specific. Outside of my core nursing classes I have taken a full year of Anatomy + physiology with a lab, a semester of microbiology with a lab, multiple psychology, sociology and ethics classes. Next year I will also be taking statistics. I have been getting a lot of mixed advice about the MCAT/admissions process. I realize nursing is not the best premed but I am almost halfway through so I am not switching now. My biggest concern is that I will struggle with the MCAT prep/test as I have not taken many of the general science courses recommended by AAMC. I have ordered ExamKrackers books and I use the Khan academy app, and I plan on doing the 10 week prep101 course in Calgary next year. I have always considered myself an independent learner. I am very good at teaching myself. Is it absolutely asinine to teach myself courses like chem, physics, biology, genetics etc over the course of 1.5yrs (part time when in school, full time when not)? I plan on taking the MCAT for real summer of 2020, so any courses I should be taking additionally I will need to have completed this spring/summer (2019). As much as I don’t want to take additional summer courses, I will do whatever it takes to up my chances of getting into med. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am meeting with an academic consultant at the U of L this week to discuss my options. Please tell me: if you believe I should take additional courses this spring/summer to prepare, and which ones would benefit me most. Also, any advice on research opportunities through the u of L when I am not taking a traditional science degree would be appreciated. Like I said I am completely clueless so any advice is welcome.
  3. Sorry if I’m not supposed to post here! My UG is Psychology and my schools of interest don’t require prerequisites, has anyone been in a similar situation and self studied for the MCAT? how long did you give yourself? Did you study while in school? TIA

  5. Okay I know 6 is a lot but please read.I started a degree online back in 2013 and hated it. I pretty much neglected it because my parents borderline forced me (as I had a good job in a small town without a Uni). It was in HR and after i just didn't bother with the first semester but said I would give it a second go - same outcome. Not one ounce of me took it seriously nor thought about long term outcome.ANYWAYS, since then i've been doing my psychology degree, full course load and in class (I relocated). I have a 3.8 GPA and have been volunteering for 3 years now. I've submerged myself in the "premed" lifestyle and course load, EC's, etc. Until the other day I realized that my online FAIL is now haunting me.So my question is. Has anyone ever omitted transcripts from their application and if I submit them will they even CONSIDER having me in for an interview? My cumulative GPA with 6 fails seems like something I can't make a come back from. Please don't judge I'm in a pretty deep mental rut about this already.
  6. Ok so I'm new to this stuff and this may sound stupid but do med schools drop your worst year or I've even heard they only count only your last two? Sorry for sounding kinda useless I'm just a first year still a baby trying to get used to uni any response is appreciated and good luck everyone!!
  7. Which Canadian (or US, but Canada is preferred) med school has some kind of forgiveness in their application? I have a very poor GPA from 1 year of a previous unrelated degree and refuse to let it impact my (now) very strong application. I know University of Calgary can "ignore" (for lack of a better term) post-secondary from 10+ years ago. Does anyone else know of anything else similar but not as drastic? Ex. only calculating a cGPA from your best 3 years. Literally anything that doesn't make me wait 4 more years. No way am I going to omit those old transcripts from my application so please don't bother suggesting. Thanks in advance
  8. Couriered my transcripts to UofC and they were received on September 26th. Once I submitted my app, the transcript status no longer says received. What gives?

  10. I've tried sending an email to the admissions office with my below questions and they have not responded yet and it's been over a week. If anyone could please help me here that would be greatly appreciated. I am currently working on my medical applications for the University of Calgary and have read the application manual; however, I still have a few questions related to inputting grades for the transcript section and verifiers for the Top 10 experiences section: Regarding the transcript, I took an online course with Thompson Rivers University that lasted from January to July 2017. Since it falls between the categories "September to April 2017" and "Spring/Summer 2017", I am not sure which category to put this course under. On my transcript, it is noted as a winter course, but the dates lasted until summer. The course was a self-paced continuing education course and I was working while studying. Please kindly advise on the best course of action. According to the manual, the Top 10 experiences require verifiers for volunteer, employment, and education entries and that the verifier must have an email from the organization. I'm planning to put an entry regarding my time working at a non-profit organization; however, my manager has left the organization and started her own business. She was the one that hired me and supervised my work, and she does not have an email with the non-profit organization. Am I still allowed to use her as my verifier? I have a few student club related activities that I would also like to include as part of my Top 10 experiences. I have verifiers available for those activities, but they all use personal emails. The student club organizations never had a club email and only used personal emails. Should I still include them as verifiers or is it not necessary? I would also like to include my experience practicing and teaching Taekwondo. I have asked my Taekwondo Master and owner of the Dojang as my verifier but their organization email is a "gmail" account. Would that be acceptable? Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.
  11. Hi, Does anyone know how retaken courses are calculated for UCAN? For example at my Uni if you retake a course, your old grade will be replaced with the retaken course grade in the overall GPA calculation. Does this apply to U of C as well? Thanks in advance.

  15. Quick question - should one include going to university/ earning a degree as one of their top 10 experiences? There is no doubt that you can address many of the characteristics in your impact statement, but on the other hand everyone applying has attended at least some classes. thoughts?
  16. Whenever I click "To view a detailed summary, click here.", a blank window opens up... is this problem happening with anybody else? Because I received most of my awards through the University, I am not sure who to put as the primary contact in the information. Can anybody suggest what I write here? Thanks!
