  1. Hey there, Just wanted a little insight on Alberta/Edmonton/Calgary as a whole. Being from Toronto, don't have much experience about it other than the fact that its freezing cold lol. How do you like the cities? How is the cost of living, weather, social life/people, activities, enviorment, etc. compared to Toronto/Vancouver. Cheers, Richard
  2. Hey folks, a quick question. Did you check if all of your verifiers received the UofA email for verification? I asked one of my verifiers, and it seems he has not received it anything yet from UofA. Do all activity verifiers get checked? If so, then does it simply mean that this individual who has not received anything yet will be emailed a bit later? I ask this because all the other verifiers got emailed last week, except perhaps this person. So I'm not sure if I should talk to UofA about it and perhaps tell them to resend the email. (Btw, I am an in-province applicant, if that would help with anything) Thanks again.
  3. Hello! I figured a new thread should be started for the 2018 applicants/class of 2022s. Since this is about a month late, I'm sure you all know that the LOI and Pharmacist Consultation Form has been posted for this cycle, but here's the link anyways: https://www.cms.ualberta.ca/pharm/programs/undergraduate-bsc-in-pharmacy/prospective-student/admission-requirements. Best of luck to all, and I (and I'm sure other pharm students will bounce into this thread) am always willing to answer whatever questions I can!
  4. I am feeling really torn between Western and U of A for OT and I am running out of time to decide. I would love to hear opinions from a number of people in order to get a more representative sample of the student experience.
  5. Hello everyone, I am set to graduate in June 2018 with a Bachelor of Engineering from a university in Ontario. I've recently decided to look into the possibility of applying to medical schools in Alberta, Ontario and BC. I've always had an interest in medicine but somehow didn't think I would be able to get in. Now that I am pretty much done with my undergrad, I am considering the option again. I did very well in university (GPA around 3.9 if considering Alberta and probably lower in Ontario, OMSAS scale is a bit less advantageous, have not looked at BC GPA conversion yet) and I am now planning on taking the MCAT this summer. My question has more to do with ECs than grades or MCAT score. Because of my degree and personal circumstances, I've had to work part-time all throughout university as well as complete co-op placements (for experience and to help pay for school). That left very little time for any other type of extra-curricular involvement. I am considering applying for this cycle (for Fall 2019) but I am a bit discouraged by my lack of ECs. I did research as co-ops twice for 4 months each time (nothing to do with medicine) and worked oil and gas for another 8 months. As far as other work experience, I've had many part-time jobs, some more relevant than others (mentor vs McDonalds). I would appreciate any advice on applying for this cycle. My plan is to work after graduation and work on my ECs but I am debating putting money and time into the current cycle.
  6. I was hoping that a current or previous U of A OT student could tell me more about the student selected modules for course 543. I am trying to determine whether this is component of the program at U of A that appeals to me. What topics have you had to choose from?
  7. Does anyone know when the admission offers for MOT come out for U of A?
  8. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm definitely at a major crossroads... I've applied to UBC twice now and have been rejected both times. Have scored around a 28 NAQ both times, and 12 and 16 on AQ respectively. I knew I had to work on my grades after undergrad and so went back and did a masters and just finished an unclassified term. So now, I just got my grades back from doing the unclassified term at UBC. Even with those courses, and a masters degree (37 credits combined), my overall average minus my lowest year is only 82%. I did my BSc at UBC and unfortunately ended up with a 79% average overall, so that's really dragging me down. I scored 513 on the MCAT (128 CARS) but that doesn't seem to help my chances at any schools as my GPA excludes me from applying to most. I actually didn't apply to any other schools aside from UBC for the past two cycles I've been rejected. I did the math and looks like I'm going to do a whole other undergrad degree (or at least 120 credits at around 90%) in order to pull my grades up high enough to have a competitive AQ for UBC. However, I would not like to end up on the other side of that still being rejected from med school and no real career prospects. Because of this, I'm debating doing an accelerated nursing program at either UBC or U of C. Or, even possibly going to the University of Sydney for med. However, after reading through some of the forums here Australia doesn't seem like a good option. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for me... I'd love to hear from anyone who managed to pull their grades up through nursing and got into med, or even moved to Alberta and got IP status. I'm hoping after nursing I would be competitive enough for IP at U of A or U of C (or maybe even decide to remain a nurse!) and hopefully, my MCAT will not be too old to use. Thanks!
  9. Is there anyone in Toronto who has an interview at UofA and who would like to get together for practice? It would be particularly beneficial if we could get at least one person who's been through this experience at UofA before but this is also a call to all the Edmonton naive (like me).

  12. Hey everyone, I'm currently an Alberta resident going to school at Arizona State University and set to graduate in Spring 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance. I've recently decided to look into the possibility of applying to med school in Alberta since becoming a doctor is something I've always wanted to do but didn't think possible. I haven't really taken any of the pre-reqs (being a business major and all) and have a 3.81 cGPA. I am at ASU as a D1 athlete which is why i never pursued a science undergraduate, and have one year of eligibility left after this to potentially knock off some pre-reqs or get some clinical or research experience. I've heard some schools like U of C and U of A don't require pre-reqs. I haven't written the MCAT but feel I could achieve an average or slightly above average grade if I studied hard for it. On top of that, I feel overall I have a pretty good resume considering extracurriculars serving in leadership positions on sports teams but no clinical or research experience. I would just like to get some thoughts on whether I even have a chance at getting into med school in Alberta and what I need to do to improve my chances. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  13. Hi All, This post is aimed at past/current MScOT students who can give us prospective/incoming students more information on the program and reasons to accept our offer. Personally, I would like to know if the program is overly technical/super science-oriented? Thanks!

    Obtaining Alberta Residency

Hey guys, so I'm IP BC, I've cross posted in UBC thread so hopefully not violating terms by posting here too.... Wondering if I work for 6-8 months rurally within Alberta whether I'd qualify for Alberta residency and rural considerations? If I got Alberta residency, do I get to keep my BC IP one if I'm back in BC and working by April / May next year? I will simultaneously be doing online schoolwork out of BC universities. What would be decent, competitive IP stats for Alberta? How many weeks out of each month, or months out of the year would I be required to live/work in either place in order to get my residency?

  16. Hey everyone on Premed101. I'm a member of the UofA DDS 2020 orientation week committee. Just heard the invites for interviews have started to go out, so we thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for all the interviewees to set up rides, get information about the interview and maybe (because I know its what this page is for) compare scores. Good luck to all those invited, the class of 2020 will be helping at the interviews so I hope to see you all in March.
  17. Hello, If you are interested in joining an interview practice group for the MMI (Alberta Schools) or if you already have a practice group and need extra people, please pm me. Skype is also an option (for non-Albertans), pm me if interested. Thanks
  18. I'm thinking about possibly moving to Alberta this year if my interviews don't work out so that I can apply as an in-province applicant. My family seems to think that it would be very beneficial as their cutoffs for in-province applicants are a lot lower than what they have for out of province students. Part of me agrees because then I'd be well above the cutoffs....but it's scary. Would it really be worth it? Would it greatly improve my chances? Has anyone else done something like this before? Has it helped? Just some background, I've got a cGPA for Alberta sitting at 3.86, a 513 MCAT (128 CARS), and I think good ECs. Applied to Alberta and several other schools this year as an OOP but still waiting for interviews. Thank you so much! I appreciate any input.
  19. Hello! I have a question regarding the specialty focus of MPT programs in Canada. I was told that UBC has a neuro focus while Alberta has a sports focus and Western has an orthopedic focus, is this true? Also, what do Queens and McMaster focus on? Thanks!

  21. Edmonton-Downtown 2 bedroom condo -3.6 km to U of A Hospital. on the bike path. 10909 103 Avenue Northwest, Edmonton, AB, Canada find this fabulous condo on www.MEDShousing.com Listing ID #0007562 https://medshousing.com/properties/great-downtown-edmonton-highrise-for-rent/ This spacious, condo is perfect for young professionals looking for a central urban living. Medical Residents/Students are preferred. It’s located in a great area (on 104 ave and 109 st) in a steel and concrete high-rise on the 12th floor. It’s a block from groceries, and more importantly, it’s 11 mins bike ride (3.6km) to the University of Alberta Hospital, and an 11 drive to the Royal Alexandra Hospital. It’s right on a bike path and super close to restaurants, bars etc on Jasper ave. The neighbourhood is great (lots of residents/docs also live in the area/building) I loved living there, and had I not moved to Calgary for the mountains, I would have stayed there. It’s about 1200sq ft. 2 bed, 2 bath, with tile and engineered hardwood flooring in an open concept main living area. It comes with an underground parking stall and an extra storage unit on the deck (I have a lot of gear – I had no problem storing everything, AND winter tires). It is partially furnished with a couch, TV hutch and stand, bookshelf, side table, BBQ, dining table, bar and all the usual kitchen appliances, washer/dryer. I’m sure the current tenant would be amenable to negotiate selling some of his stuff. This condo is available July 1, with earlier move-in likely available. Not what you are looking for? lots more to see on www.MEDshousing.com

    5Th Years Be Warned!

Hey everyone After a talk with a faculty of science advisor at the University of Alberta I realized that they have this new(?) policy/rule of forcing people who are trying to do a 5th year to only take the classes that they need to graduate especially after they've gone over the 120 credits needed for graduation. How do I get around this? Has anyone experienced or is experiencing the same thing? I asked them if they would actually force me to drop my winter classes and he nodded and said that yes that is likely what would happen. If I explained the situation to them do you think they would let me extend my time and balance out my classes over the course of a year? Has anyone had any experience with this? He said for every class I take after 120 credits I have to get written permission for each and every class... I would really appreciate any advice/help. Has anyone whose done a 5th year or beyond had this experience?

    Alberta Mcat Seats

I was so upset to see that there were no more Alberta seats left for writing the MCAT. If anyone is looking to reschedule their dates, has received an offer to a med school, or is unable to write in August for any reason, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE message me. I do not want to have to leave the country to write because I just can't afford the added costs! I would really appreciate it
