  1. Hey all, I am hoping to apply this following cycle but am just curious about what constitutes a publication. I am currently doing some work with a Neurological Association where I am writing articles for them which they post on their website. I am curious whether or not this is considered a publication or not. Can you also just briefly describe to me what a publication would be. Thanks so much in advance and congrats to everyone who just found their acceptance
  2. Can someone please provide (or link me to) a step by step for how to begin my application process? How did you all get all the guidance you needed for making deadlines etc..?) I have: - written the MCAT (PS:8, VR:9, BS:10) - have a 3.85 GPA - am going into my last year of university Thanks so much, it's nice to not be so alone in all this!
  3. Hi Guys! Hopefully this question doesn't prove to be too bothersome to anyone. I was planning on applying for medical school at the end of the summer (I just finished my second year at UBC) and I was wondering whether anyone had some thoughts on where would be best to apply and whether some places just wouldnt be worth it given my EC's/Grades/Province of residence. Obviously UBC is a no-brainer to apply to haha, and I was thinking UofT and Queens as well but I just couldn't find concrete info on the statistics of other schools. PS. I am majoring in Microbiology and Immunology Here is a little about my Grades: First year Avg: 88% (first semester 87/second semester 89) - 30 Credits Summer of First year: OChem 233 =97 % and English 110 = 80% (both Med pre-reqs) = Avg of 88.5% Second Year Avg: 93% (first semester 91 avg/second semester 95 avg) - 30 Credits cGPA: 90% (90.1 to be precise) / Cumulative OMSAS GPA = 3.93 (if I converted correctly, either way no doubt it is at least 3.9) Pre-requisite Course Average: 89.6% (Only pre-req I have not taken is Biochem 302 which is a pre-req. at UBC but I can still apply) NOTE: I think taking Ochem over the summer means I can't apply to University of Ottawa doesnt it ? Whatever, good grade lol. Here is a little about my EC's (still a work in progress but please be honest with me about what you think of them, I know I still have a lot to beef up in this department): > Volunteering in local hospital ER for 1 year now (3 hours a week) starting the beginning of second year > Volunteered in Biochemistry Lab for about 8 months (12 hours a week) starting the beginning of second year > Received a scholarship of $6500 to work in the same biochemistry lab that I volunteered in on an individual project (40 hours a week) > Volunteered about 70 hours in first year at my local food bank (that is history now haha) > Science Frosh Leader (Just a few days long commitment, no biggie) > TREK student leadership program (week long program where my group and I designed a study plan and activities for elementry school students to educate them about a given scientific topic, my group did Biomes) - This one isn't a big deal either I guess > Deans list designation first year (>80% avg) > Science Scholar designation second year (>90% avg) > Trek Excellence Scholarship (for second year performance) - $1500 Tentative Long term Volunteer gigs (wont effect my application really but opinions on them would be cool ) > Currently accepted into the Big Buddies of Vancouver Mentorship program ( was supposed to be a weekly mentor to a kid in a school near me, hang out with him, plan activities every week but Vancouver Schools decided to strike and it didn't pan out) I start in September > Canuck Place Family Volunteer - Weekly volunteer to help a family out who is dealing with a terminally ill child (hang out with the child while they take care of other children/duties) - 3 to 4 hours a week starting in September > Will likely continue to work with my lab in a paid position but I was wondering whether it would be a good chance to use my experience to find work in another lab (would multiple labs be more ideal for an application??) MCAT score: Taking it in August, yes, if I blow it there would be no point in even applying haha but I do want to get started on my applications early. All in all, I am pretty social guy and I'd say my social skills are solid haha, I play in a few school intramural leagues, I really need to join a club though but sadly the one im super passionate about I got interviewed for but didn't make the final cut I will keep searching because I'd love me some club experience. Sorry for the long read guys and gals! I would appreciate any wisdom on best schools to apply given my summer course, average, BC residence and more. Feel free to rip my grades and EC's to shreds if you must, I am just applying to get some feedback of where I stand with various medical schools (although if I get in that would be amaaaazing haha!) I hope to beef up by EC's enough to have a good chance by the end of my upcoming year. Hopefully the fact that my grades have been consistently improving bodes well with the adcoms? Thanks again for the read I really would appreciate your feedback!
