  1. Hey guys, I was just wondering for those who got interviews at McGill: how competitive does ones CV have to be? I just finished my first year of Cegep and will be applying next cycle to Mcgill + Francophone schools. Academically R score in 38-39 range at the moment, but a lot will depend on next semester (over 50% of it because second semester won’t count due to COVID-19). My biggest worry is that my CV won’t be competitive. Unfortunately, I was planning on working and volunteering this summer but everything has been cancelled since COVID-19. Will the fact that most of my commitments ended in 2019 affect my application? My most recent experience would be an award in 2019 and a job during summer 2019, all I would have since then are things in the hobbies section/education sections. Additionally, for the verifiers, does anyone know how that process works? Also how many items should one have to be competitive? thanks a lot!
  2. Hi guys, I am very new to this community, so sorry if this question has been asked before. I saw in many of your posts that students have publications (as leading or 2nd, 3rd authors) and conference papers which is really amazing. I wonder if anyone can provide some insights on how can undergrad get their research published. (i.e. is the published work done in summer or you have to stick to a project longer). Thank you so much in advance!!
  3. Hi! I know this might sound like a silly question but which Canadian medical schools focus the least on your extracurriculars?
  4. As a former premed, I recall sorting out the details and understanding the requirements of different faculties to be a little daunting/intimidating, particularly if coming from a non-traditional background. I've created a two page guide outlining on: page 1 - relative importance/weight and range for (GPA, EC, MCAT); page 2 - details concerning GPA calculations, course loads, second degree policies, summer courses, grad policies, etc.. I've been on premed for some time and notice the same questions come up often, so hopefully the guide will help orient people. A number more details could be added, but this may give a first step in understanding where one's chances are. I haven't included Manitoba, Memorial, NOSM, Saskatchewan, or the francophone Quebec schools, since either I'm not familiar with their policies or they don't tend to admit many out of province or general profile students. The guide is only a first step and doesn't have all details - check the websites, contact the schools, etc.. for final clarifications. Clearly, page 1 is a little subjective, but it seems to be the range that I have observed or seen stats for typical admitted students. Finally, as far as I know the information is accurate, but if there are disagreements or inaccuracies, please let me know. I hope this will prove useful to you as you begin or continue your journey. I received useful advice and found good info here, so hopefully this will help you. Good luck! EDIT: Updated June 5, 2016 (with UOttawa MCAT) MetaPremedvJune2016.pdf

  6. Hey everyone! I must apologize for asking these nebulous questions. To give some brief context, I am a 4th year student (2012-6), spending two years in open studies (2010-2012). My life got derailed by a severe illness in January 2011, which made required treatment over that summer and the fall term of 2012 (which I couldn't attend classes for) and winter term of 2013. I've been working hard since then to do research and obtain the necessary pre-requisites, and subsequently my volunteering hours are not superb. However, where I really suffer is in Extra-curricular activities. To be honest, I haven't done structured athletic activities (I work out by myself). Nor have I attended anything that would be a 'cultural event'. Therefore I'm thinking about including Drumming, which I did from 2006-2010, as well as a rock climbing group I attended from 2006-9. If desperate I might include family vacations (this would be much more recent). Would going back that far be appropriate? Are family vacations actually appropriate? I guess another question would be does anyone know if I can list my research experience both as employment (I was paid, though admittedly by scholarship) and describe it as diversity of experience (for the Edmonton application)? Could I add my upcoming research I'm doing for credit this term as diversity of experience? Sorry for rambling on about this and thanks for your opinions/help. Note: I know for OSMAS the cutoff is at 16 (which fits for drumming, and may count for climbing); this mainly focuses on the Edmonton & Calgary applications.
  7. Hey guys, I'm a 2nd year looking to apply next cycle to many schools across the country. Definitely the 4 in Ontario (I'm IP), and potentially UBC/Calgary/Alberta. I'm currently figuring out what I'll be doing this summer, and it looks like I'll either get a tech job down in SF for 4 months or get a research scholarship/job at my university. I have no prior research experience and very minimal work experience, and I was wondering which of those two you think would be more beneficial for my application considering my situation. I think I'd be equally excited to pursue either as they're both interesting opportunities, so I'd just like to hear your input. Thanks!
