  1. Hello everyone, I wanted to start a new topic about your experience at CEGEP because I would like to have a better idea of this whole new world. Please tell me which CEGEP you went to, how you managed to get through it and if you have any tips (schedule, courses, extracurricular). Also, I heard that it's possible to take some courses during the summer or even during another semester. The thing is, I heard that it is not recommended to take your CEGEP courses in more than 4 semesters, otherwise some med universities will refuse your application. Could you please give me more details about it? Thank you very much everyone.
  2. Hi everyone, I am a prospective nursing student interested in applying to UBC's accelerated nursing program, and was wondering what your experiences have been like prior to applying to nursing school. I have been volunteering at a seniors' care home for the past 4.5+ years (it'll be almost 6 years during the time of my application), where I've assisted with feeding residents during mealtimes, help recreation staff with activities/games, and engage in one to one conversations with residents. Because of my extensive volunteer experience, I was able to get a part time job at another seniors' care home as a recreation/activity assistant. Here, I lead exercise programs and lead recreational programs independently. I am currently in the process of applying to become a Big Brother mentor/buddy so that I can expand my experience to children as well. Do you think that my current volunteer/work experience is sufficient and will be seen as "competitive" for admission to UBC's nursing program? Are there other things I should be involving myself with (certain organizations, groups of people, etc.)? Feel free to comment regardless of which university you attend - any and all information is valuable and will be very much appreciated! Thank you everyone!
  3. I am an international student with a 4 years Bachelors in Dental Surgery.I have worked in a clinical setting as a dentist for one year and now want to apply for a masters in public health. I feel I need more experience in public health field that would help me get admission in a competitive MPH program. But I am confused as to what kind of work/volunteer experience counts as public health experience and which would be helpful for my admission application. I am in Ontario Canada and would welcome some advice in this regards and also welcome suggestions on how to go about applying for the suggested work.
  4. Hey guys, I am a civil engineering student at UBC in my third year interested in dental school. My question is regarding work/volunteer experience. Since I am in engineering, I do co-op every summer (4-8 month long work terms). Thus, I do not have as much time to do research or volunteer in health science related fields as a science student would. Will this hurt my chances of getting accepted or will my engineering co-op experience be seen as a positive? Should I instead focus my entire summer on volunteering/working in health science related areas? Thanks in advance
  5. Hello! I am a first year pharmacy student and I came across the undergraduate summer research program at the Faculty of Pharmacy at University of Toronto. I was hoping there would be someone here who has participated in this program and could tell me about their experience. I have already gotten in touch with the supervisor I am interested in working with but any other tips on the application process? Letter of intent? How was the research experience?
  6. Hello all! If you are looking for an opportunity to get some in-hospital experience in the US, please check out the COPE's International Health Scholar's Program (https://www.l3connect.org/prospective-applicants/GHE). This is a great opportunity to learn more about the US health care system and get to see some of our facilities. This program is also in partnership with UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health. Depending on how long you are interested in staying, you may have the opportunity to get hands-on patient care experience in the hospital as well. We currently have opportunities for this in Seattle and the Los Angeles area. We just extended our fall application deadline to October 9th, with a start date of November 2nd. Please apply at our website: https://www.l3connect.org/prospective-applicants/GHE Feel free to let me know if you have any questions! 7. I played Classical Piano for about 12 years before switching to jazz. I play in a quartet now (been doing so for about a year and a half), whereas when I played Classical music it was solo. Does this warrant creating two entries in Diversity of Experience instead of one? That's what I did last cycle, but my NAQ was pretty awful, lol.. so I'm wondering what everyone else thinks?
  8. Hi all, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that as each day passes I get more and more anxious/nervous for class to start. I was just wondering if any upper year students could share their thoughts on what their early experience was like, and provide any sage advice to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Ultimately, what were some of your major likes and/or dislikes at the onset, and how did you move through the process. Thanks
