  1. I recently failed a visiting clerkship elective. I'm a new clerk, and was completely caught off guard with the grade as no preceptor indicated that I was on my way to a "deficiency." I thought I had a good rapport with the preceptors and patients, although they did point out that they expected me to have more knowledge in the sub specialty. Honestly, much of what they wanted me to know felt out of scope of my clinical education but I was fine with the somewhat unfair pimping. Otherwise, I thought the elective went fine; I was always early, read around patients, offered to stay late and help - and I often did. The review said they expected better presentation skills and a stronger ability to create DD and plan, which is fair. But there were no residents during the rotation, an no one observed any exams/interviews which are normally my strong suit. My plan also evolved from the interview/exam which no one witnessed. And it was my first week of clerkship... In any case, I'm wondering how screwed I am. Still have +1 year of clerkship. Is this considered a major red flag? Am I screwed for any specialty, even non competitive ones? I have to remediate the elective at the end of clerkship - after interviews - if that makes any difference. Thanks for any input.
  2. Okay I know 6 is a lot but please read.I started a degree online back in 2013 and hated it. I pretty much neglected it because my parents borderline forced me (as I had a good job in a small town without a Uni). It was in HR and after i just didn't bother with the first semester but said I would give it a second go - same outcome. Not one ounce of me took it seriously nor thought about long term outcome.ANYWAYS, since then i've been doing my psychology degree, full course load and in class (I relocated). I have a 3.8 GPA and have been volunteering for 3 years now. I've submerged myself in the "premed" lifestyle and course load, EC's, etc. Until the other day I realized that my online FAIL is now haunting me.So my question is. Has anyone ever omitted transcripts from their application and if I submit them will they even CONSIDER having me in for an interview? My cumulative GPA with 6 fails seems like something I can't make a come back from. Please don't judge I'm in a pretty deep mental rut about this already.
  3. Hi guys, So of course I would love to get into medical school on the first try, but to be completely honest with myself, my application is severely lacking. (No ECs, No volunteering, One summer of research, No pubs, No Submissions, Average GPA, writing MCAT next month). I would be devastated if I don't get in, but I wouldn't be all that surprised. I know this is really what I want to do, so even if it takes me 3+ tries, I'll do it. What should I do with my time until reapplying the year after? (Or for the 2-3 years it takes me to get in?) I was thinking about applying to college to get some practical training, or maybe getting a Master's. Does anyone have any input on how much of an asset these would be to my application? Of course, I'll go find a long-term volunteer placement and commit to it. Any suggestions? Anything I can do to improve my GPA despite already finishing undergrad? Should I keep hunting for research ops? (I know that I really don't want to do research my future, though.) Good luck to everyone this coming cycle, and thanks for your input! ♥ (My first choice is UofT, if that matters at all.)
  4. First of all let me say that I'm not sure whether Non-Traditional applicants was the most appropriate place to post this. In my view engineering to medicine is considered "non traditional" from all the science majors that apply. Anyway, now that that is out of the way... I am a first year biomedical engineering student at the University of Guelph that is planning to apply to medical school after my degree. I was wondering if any other engineer doctors could relate their experiences as to how they managed to keep up on ECs while at the same time navigating what I've come to realize is a very difficult curriculum. I am very scared currently because I believe I failed a first year mechanics course.
