  1. Hello everyone, I have been accepted to the upcoming 2018 year at Schulich Medicine. What laptops are most of the current med students using? Do you have any recommendations i.e. PC, Macbooks?
  2. I am sorry to bother, I can only imagine how annoyed fourth years who are getting interviews and preparing themselves for medical school are with all these first year questions. I just ask that you think of how nervous and scared you are were in first year and try to understand where I am coming from. I am currently second semester of my first year. First semester I ended up with marks I am not impressed with at all. Overall my first semester average tallied up to a 72. (2.70 GPA) My midterm marks were 84 (Chemistry 1) 64 (Biology 1st sem) 67 (Calc 1st sem) 48 (Physics 1) 67 (Psychology 1st sem) I just got my midterm marks for this semester and they are as followed 70.2 (Chemistry 2) 80 (Biology second sem) 88 (Calculus second sem) 68.5 (Physics 2) 89 (Pchycology 2nd sem) I will admittedly say I worked a lot harder this semester on my midterms. Chemistry really upset me because if I'm being honest I barely studied for that midterm first semester, where as this semester I put in 2 weeks studying just for a midterm. Biology also really upset me because I dedicated so much time to Biology and I was honestly expecting 100 in that midterm, Calculus I studied much harder but didn't put half the effort I did as I did into Biology so to get a higher mark in that just didn't compute. Physics admittedly need to work harder in, it's just really hard because I did so poorly last semester and I thought I could motivate myself to get through it, new semester and all but I always find myself struggling and feeling stupid with it and it puts me off. Phycology I studied REALLY hard for, any free time I could get before that midterm, I used. I even created this voice note and would listen to it in the shower, I made notes and even transferred them on my phone so anytime I was on the bus I would look. However I will say the most amount of effort I put in was in Biology. Biology I studied hardest for and Chemistry I studied second hardest for. People who BARELY studied (but maybe they're lying who knows) who took MY notes who NEVER went to class, got 96+! I just, I don't know I am feeling very depressed at the moment and I don't think I have ever felt as depressed in my life. Admittedly, I am starting to feel suicidal; this is not a normal depression this is a give up on life depression and I have never felt this way before in my life. I feel like so many people just do well, have talents have ability have gifts, and I do not expect anyones empathy because SO MUCH people do well in the same circumstances as me and they do not get depressed or suicidal and they face the same stresses, so who am I to talk? But I cannot lie about how I am feeling, this is how I am honestly feeling and I do not know what to do, do I go to therapy, do I give up do I tell myself I just need to work harder? Accept that people can pull 90+ more easily because they are simply more intelligent. I do not know, all I know is that my mental health is at a fatal point and that I keep working hard only to be disappointed with my own self. Sorry, hate to bring negativity on such a positive forum; you all are probably getting interviews and happy and here I am raining on the parade. I just don't know what else to do or who else to go to.

    Bad First year?

Okay so far I just had midterms and medicine has always been my dream. My parents actually have tried to discourage it from me telling me it takes too much time and they even told me to go to college which I ignored. Basically on reading week I got really sick and honestly this is really embarrassing to say but all of you are on your way to being doctors or already doctors so I will just say it. During my biology midterm I got a really bad case of diarrhea and I honestly rushed the midterm so fast because I had to get out of there. I ended up with a 63, my labs so far and assignments have all been in the 90's; but this midterm really brought me down. I got a 92 on my chemistry midterm because that was a while after and my stomach finally went back to normal. I haven't gotten my other marks for my other classes yet but right now I'm really discouraged because of this mark. If your GPA for your first year isn't good does that completely shatter your chances of medical school? Because honestly, I don't have a back up plan, I don't know what else you could really do with a biomedical degree if you don't pursue further education except be a biology teacher and even that requires teaching school and something I would not like to do. Honestly, everyone I've talked to about medical school keeps telling me not to do it my friend told me her brothers friend even killed himself when he was trying to get into med school and couldn't get in. It's scaring me but there's just something about being a doctor that intrigues me; yes money is obviously a plus but its not just that; I don't know I really want to help people; I want to be that doctor that people love to visit. Are my dreams shattered?
  4. Hey guys So currently, I've completed high school, moving on to McMaster university in the fall. I'm going into the chemical and physical sciences, hoping to major in medical physics. I've already picked out my courses for first year, which includes physics, chemistry, biology, and calculus courses. I'm a little concerned about taking the MCAT because I know that I will struggle with the critical reasoning and psychology (and sociology etc) portions. So I was wondering, is it too early to prepare for those sections this summer? I plan on applying to most med schools by 3rd or 4rth year
  5. Hey guys So currently, I've completed high school, moving on to McMaster university in the fall. I'm going into the chemical and physical sciences, hoping to major in medical physics. I've already picked out my courses for first year, which includes physics, chemistry, biology, and calculus courses. I was wondering, what can I start doing now (or this fall) to make my self a strong candidate for med schools? Whether it'd be advice for what I should be doing on my spare time, or what kind of things I should be involved in, I'd appreciate any helpful tips. thanks
  6. Hey guys I just finished my first year at mac with a GPA of 3.61 - this was mostly due to a C+ in Anthropology which I really regret taking and bad time management skills in other courses I have however identified my areas for improvement and the necessary changes I need to implement in my study habits to improve my academic outcomes. That being said, I calculated my cumulative GPA and discovered that even if I were to get straight 4.0 in my next 2 years of undergrad (which is possible) my cGPA would only be 3.86 Any advice on how I could improve my final cGPA ( either through summer school or taking more than a full course load in the school year or anything else) ? And honestly, do I still have a chance of getting in ? Any insight is appreciated!
  7. All my marks have been fine so far from A- to A+ for first year, but I got a B+ in one of my half year courses, and I know it's not the end of the world, but it has been bothering me, and I'm a little worried!! As long as I do much better in my second year, I just hope I still have a good chance of applying to med in third year, assuming my other stuff like MCAT and EC's is good? I don't know exactly what my current GPA is but I'm predicting for OMSAS it's going to be about 3.8?? I would appreciate it if I could hear about some of your experiences as third year applicants, like what the GPA expectations are and if you guys ever got less than an A (like a B+) in a course and how much of an effect that has on your application? I know marks aren't everything but still, lol thank you!!
  8. Hey guys! I'm currently in the process of planning my courses for my first year at Queen's. Since I'm considering to major or specialize in life sciences later on, I already know that I'll be talking CHEM 112, BIOL 102/103, MATH 121, and PHYS 117. I have space for an elective. I'm thinking about PSYC 100, which I heard is a very popular choice, plus I really enjoy studying psychology. However, I would like to apply to medical schools in the future, so I don't know if it would be a better idea to take English during first year to fill that specific prerequisite and not have to worry about it later on? Or is it common for people to take in the summer, since it's probably a challenge to get a high mark in English? The other elective that I'm also considering is French. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me! Thank you!
  9. So I got into UTM for "Behaviour, Genetics and Neurobiology" and these are the courses I have to take for the program... Students in Behaviour, Genetics and Neurobiology take Biology, Calculus, Chemistry (BIO152H, BIO153H5, MAT134Y5, CHM140Y5).What other courses in first year do I have to take for pre requisites for med school? I did some research and it said "Prerequisite courses include two full courses in life sciences and one full course in social science or humanities or language. " for UofT Faculty of Medicine. In general, to be eligible to apply to UofT, McMaster, Western, etc. What courses should i take first year in addition to the required ones in my program. Thanks
  10. Hi guys! Long time lurker, first time poster. So I just completed my first year a York University and my GPA was around 3.8 So far my ECAs include, a poster presentation and one publication in the Global Journal of Health Sciences I am also volunteering at Odette Cancer Centre for the past 5-6 months and I am the vice-president of one of the student clubs on campus- Canadian International Human Rights Organization. I feel as if this is not enough and I am constantly stressed out about not doing enough. Can someone please tell me if Im doing fine right now or I need to take on some more things. I am also currently working at a daycare. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank You so much!
  11. Hi all, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that as each day passes I get more and more anxious/nervous for class to start. I was just wondering if any upper year students could share their thoughts on what their early experience was like, and provide any sage advice to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Ultimately, what were some of your major likes and/or dislikes at the onset, and how did you move through the process. Thanks
