  1. Hey guys, I am a fourth year, finishing up a molecular biology specialist with a chem minor. I will be taking a gap year next year to apply for med school, and wanted to work full time in a research lab (wet lab preferably) in any downtown Toronto hospital for a full one year. I emailed a bunch of PI's past few weeks (google search) but none of them have responded, so I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong. I have a bunch of research experience/academic achievements under my belt, NSERC, thesis, etc. Am I just applying way too early (available to start working June 2019) or are most of these connection based for university graduates? I'm looking for somewhere around Sickkids or the UHN network, but usually I see those that already have a masters get these full time positions. What's the best approach for a university graduate like me to get such positions?
  2. Hi everyone, I'm new to this website and this is my very first post here. I would just like to ask if anyone has taken a Gap year before they applied to Medical School (more specifically but not limited to, the University of Manitoba). I'm currently a sophomore student and my GPA is not very strong at the moment and I have yet to take the MCAT but I figured that I could just do it during my Gap year if I do decide to take it. I know that they (the UofM) do adjusted gpa but even if my gpa is adjusted, I am really not confident that it will be competitive enough... In fact, I think that by the time I graduate, I might just reach the bare minimum required. I plan on taking two years off just so I can work, volunteer more, improve my CV and also help out my parents a bit. I really want to work on a hospital during my gap years with really any responsibility. I really am not picky. What is the average age for people who goes to medical school and start their journey? I understand that it varies from school to school but I'm just really curious and kinda just want a rough "guess-timate" And does anyone have any suggestions and advice on what else I should so during my gap year to help me stand out a little bit more? Do you recommend taking a Gap year? If you didn't take a Gap year, would you have considered taking one and what would you have done? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, Thank you all and Have a great day!

  5. Hi guys, So of course I would love to get into medical school on the first try, but to be completely honest with myself, my application is severely lacking. (No ECs, No volunteering, One summer of research, No pubs, No Submissions, Average GPA, writing MCAT next month). I would be devastated if I don't get in, but I wouldn't be all that surprised. I know this is really what I want to do, so even if it takes me 3+ tries, I'll do it. What should I do with my time until reapplying the year after? (Or for the 2-3 years it takes me to get in?) I was thinking about applying to college to get some practical training, or maybe getting a Master's. Does anyone have any input on how much of an asset these would be to my application? Of course, I'll go find a long-term volunteer placement and commit to it. Any suggestions? Anything I can do to improve my GPA despite already finishing undergrad? Should I keep hunting for research ops? (I know that I really don't want to do research my future, though.) Good luck to everyone this coming cycle, and thanks for your input! ♥ (My first choice is UofT, if that matters at all.)
  6. Hello, I hope everyone is well. I had a few questions regarding admissions. First of all I would like to lay out my information as clearly as possible. My cgpa is about 3.00 currently. I have currently finished my 4th year with a 3.725 gpa (with 5 full credits, 10 courses). I am planning on doing a 5th year to boost my chances. However, since Queens only counts full-time years in their 2 most recent year gpa, I was thinking of taking the more demanding courses this year as a part-time student and over the summer (since they don't count summer and part-time sessions). So basically, for my 5th year I will be taking less than 3.0 credits (less than 6 courses). To be exact, about 5 courses which equates to 2.5 credits. So, then I will have to do a 6th year with more than 3.0 credits to have that year counted in the 2 year gpa. Will this work? I am concerned about this since my 4th year was full time and my 6th year will be full time but I will have a part time year in between (5th year). I am concered since it says on their website that the Full-time years may or may not be sequential. (For the 2 most recent year gpa calculation) (http://meds.queensu.ca/education/undergraduate/prospective_students/application_process/gpas/2ygpa) ..... but at the same instance the years should be the 2 most "recent". So will this workout for me? Advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
