  1. Hi everyone Are you interested in a hands-on volunteering opportunity within the health care field, hoping to gain valuable experience in first aid and patient care? St. John Ambulance, Division 54 (TriCities Branch), located in Port Moody is currently recruiting new members. As a member of St. John Ambulance, there are plenty of opportunities to learn, practice and improve your patient care skills including but not limited to: independently assessing patients with advanced care; providing oxygen therapy; obtaining vitals; taking spinal/head injury precautions and spinal packaging; providing first aid in a specialized workplace environment; and tons more! Our division covers local events (Port Moody/Coquitlam/Port Coquitlam) such as Play On! Hockey, Kick for a Cure, Terry Fox Runs, and Golden Spike Days. As a medical first responder member, you can additionally volunteer at provincial events such as Abbotsford Airshow, Vancouver Canucks, Celebration of Lights, and the Pride Parade. This is also a great place to meet other people who have interest in the same fields as you and are looking to give back to their community. Volunteering with St. John Ambulance has taught me many things that have influenced my decision to pursue medicine. I have had the pleasure to meet and work with several people of different backgrounds, many of which I've become close friends with. I thought it would be a great idea to let everyone who visits these forums know about this opportunity. If you would like to know more, don't hesitate to PM me! I can give you additional information about our Meeting Nights, as well as how to get started on volunteering with St. John Ambulance . This opportunity, of course, is open to everyone of all ages!
  2. Hi everyone, I hope all your interview preparations are going well. I'm currently a 2nd year med student at UBC. Awhile ago, after the faculty decided to matriculate me, I found myself with a large stash of notes from my own interview prep. It felt criminal to let all that go to waste so I decided to type some of it up. Of course, I then promptly forgot about the whole thing until recently when I found out that my page was getting an enormous of hits from I presume, anxious med applicants. So here's some tips/advice/case studies. When I was applying I found that the vast majority of information on the internet were either inaccurate, speculation or too anxiety-ridden to be reliable. The sieving process was unpleasant to say in the least and I don't wish the same fate on you guys. To the best of my knowledge, the information here is accurate and is borne largely from my own experiences applying. I'm not sure I would answer some of the questions the same way nowadays, but nevertheless, here it is. I hope this helps you during your prep. http://terriblemedstudent.blogspot.ca Best of luck. Ted

  4. Hi everyone! I'm currently reading about Canada's health care system, and I'm quickly realizing that, with the joys of Internet, I could be doing this for an eternity. It's hard to say what's enough in terms of information. In your opinion, how much should I know about the health care system? So far, I read about the history of health care and how medicare arrived, the structure (federal VS provincial) of the system, money allocation and how it changed over time, the college of physicians, the insurance system, and the strenght/weakness of the system (and how could be done to improve it). Would there be anything significant that I would be missing here? Thank you very much, and your help is much appreciated, Florence
  5. Hi everyone! As I am getting ready for application, I am realising that I lack a bit of knowledge about our health care system, the latest technologies, the ethical debates, etc. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good journal/website/app to read about the medical field, and that also has critiques in it (not just the plain info). I've tried Flipboard, but I was surprisingly dissapointed (or maybe am I simply not using it correctly). Thank you for you help! Florence
