  1. Hello everyone, This is my first post on premed101, how exciting! I'm thinking about sending the U of T/Western/Queens/Dalhousie admissions committee a letter regarding the recent announcement that Winter 2020 grades will not be used in GPA calculations this year, and for all subsequent years. I understand that some students have been subject to unfair grading, and would prefer this term not count due to these unforeseen circumstances. However, it hardly seems fair to say point blank that no student's Winter 2020 semester will count as a result. I do have a personal gripe with this decision because I did much better in my fourth year than in any other years, and without my Winter 2020 grades I will hardly be competitive. Ideally, I'd like to see a system where GPA is calculated with/without the winter 2020 semester and the higher one be taken. Or that students are given an option on OMSAS where they can select whether or not they'd like the last semester included (given that every applicant probably knows whether or not Winter 2020 will help or harm their GPA) Does anyone else feel similarly? Do you think sending a letter is a smart choice? (Note: I'd be happy to post my draft here, or email it to anyone who'd like to look it over). I really can't tell if I'm justified in my upset with all this. Thanks everyone, T

  3. I think this application is going to be pretty complicated as I plan on applying to OMSAS and the Alberta schools, choosing different references for each! I would love any input on my best OMSAS (or other!) options here. Main issue I foresee is a lack of a clear candidate for the non-academic/empathetic side of things. My volunteer work has not involved a lot of supervision. 2 good choices: 1. Research project/NSERC supervisor/prof (1 class): Known for about 1.5 years. Will give me a good reference academically (don't think that matters much?) and probably can comment on everything but empathy. They have my CV including my volunteering and have used that to write me a successful reference previously. 2. NSERC supervisor (this summer)/future thesis advisor/prof (3 classes)/TAd class: Known for about 1.5 years as well. I haven't done much actual research with them yet but they have taught me methods over the summer in my last lab. I think they approve of me overall. A bunch of not great choices: 3. Foreman from summer job: known for a summer lol. Wouldn't be super aware of the CANMEDs stuff but is nonacademic. 4. Lab coordinator/supervisor: Known for at least 2 years but worked with for 1.5. They ran the labs that I TA'd. 5. MSc student that kinda supervised/mentored me: Known for 2ish years. My lab had minimal PI involvement so they would teach me and help out. In that way could be considered a work supervisor. Also gave advice on grad school so mentor?? They have been my TA and we have been co-TAs so its complicated. 6. Mentor: Known for 3 years. Was a friends parent, they had mentored people before and they helped me get on my feet after a bad time, generally supported me through the process so they know about my ECs and me pretty well. 7. Leader of volunteer group: Wasn't necessarily a supervisor but they did mostly organize the activities & communication for our team. Known for 1 yr, only one with direct knowledge of my "advocate" type qualities. Is now a med student o that makes it weird maybe. So that was a lot but none of them are really hitting all the points so that's where I'm stuck
  4. Hi! I'm looking for some advice on the confidential assessment form and choosing references for OMSAS. I'm a Quebec applicant and QC schools don't ask for reference forms/letters so I don't know too much about this. I saw on the OMSAS and Ontario med school websites that we're asked to provide one academic- or employment reference and one personal (non-academic) reference. I've been able to get a professor of mine and my research supervisor to be my academic references (they both know me pretty well). I've also asked my manager of 2 years (I work in retail) who I'm really close to to also be my reference, and I feel she's able to speak about my personal qualities as well as professional. My only concern is that my manager can fit in both categories (employment/personal-character) and I don't know how strict Ontario med schools are about the two categories of references and wouldn't want my application to get rejected for such a small technicality. If anyone can clear this up and let me know if my references are okay, it would be great! Also, are references for Ontario med schools part of the selection process (for example, McMaster is 32% GPA, 32% CARS, and 32% Casper) or are they used just to make sure the applicant is not a red flag? thanks
  5. I’m an incoming medical student at a top 10 medical school in the US! I applied to both US and Canadian medical schools. I received 11 interviews from US schools, and 5 from Canadian schools (UofT, UBC, Queens, Ottawa, McGill). With extensive experience editing and proofreading university and medical school application essays, I’m happy to extend my services to help aspiring med students. Such services include: - editing personal statements (with detailed explanations and suggestions) and secondaries - editing activity descriptions/OMSAS autobiographical (ABS) sketch My edits involve thorough and detailed comments that will give you concrete advice on how to improve your writing. As I go through your essays line-by-line, I will help with: grammar/syntax, big picture ideas, organization, transitions, and coherency. Importantly, I will help you make sure that your ideas are expressed uniquely (and not in a cliche way), and that your essay clearly highlights your suitability for medicine to the admissions committee! ESSAY EDITING: Please email (medconsulting7@gmail.com) for an affordable rate! Payments will be through e transfer. I've helped several medical school applicants craft strong and memorable essays, and hope to help you do the same Email if interested: medconsulting7@gmail.com
  6. Is it possible to use an official co-curricular record (issued by the university and stamped by the dean) as a verifier for extra-curricular activities listed? Is it possible to upload such a document to OMSAS? If not, is there really any point in getting one? Other grad school apps? Thanks!
  7. Well, basically my dumbass just realized that I was supposed to specify the year in university when filling out my ABS activities. Sadly, I only put "undergraduate" for the level of education entry and the total number of hours for each activity (like AMCAS). I understand it is my fault for not reading the help page over, but I am just trying to see how severe of a mistake this would be...
  8. Hi everyone, I will be applying to the French stream at uOttawa this year (Social Accountability Initiative). For the OMSAS application, do I need to complete it in french? Do you know where can I attach the financial documentation necessary for the Social Accountability Initiative? Also, I come from a single-parent household. Do I need to write an explanatory letter as to why I am only including my single-parent's financial documentation? Thanks for your help!
  9. Does anyone else's MCAT score show up on OMSAS in the document tracking? I sent mine from AAMC a while ago and they still aren't there. Thanks! edit: just read this "OMSAS will not upload MCAT scores until October 18, 2019. The deadline for the receipt of MCAT scores is November…"
  10. Hi, I have a referee filling out the CAF (OMSAS reference form) and I need help with this one question on "are of improvement". Does anyone have good suggestions or examples of what profs usually put for that category? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you
  11. So, I heard that an A (80-89%) at York University which converts to a 3.8 on OMSAS is a 4.0 when converted to Amcas. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this. Thanks
  12. Hi, So I'm applying to med school this fall and I'm a bit confused about the OMSAS application. For each activity, I have to enter the number of hours but is that hours/week? or hours/month? or total hours? uOttawa specifies that it can be either hours/week or hours/month? But what if I'm applying to different schools at a time? When I'm doing my app do I have to specify which it is? Thanks in advance
  13. Hello, I am a long time lurker, and this is my first post. I was wondering if my fellow Ontario comrades that got interviews/invites could please give me some tips! Also, I have the following stats, I would really appreciate some feedback and perhaps recommendations on certain schools that fit my experiences/scores: 516 on the MCAT (129/128/130/129) 3.8 GPA (Perfect GPA last 2 years) ECs: Lots of volunteering at a hospital in patient care (300+ hours) 2 publications with a neurosurgeon as a 3rd author Spent the majority of my undergrad playing varsity tennis at Western University The remaining time was spent teaching special needs students with a company in my community and coaching tennis (paid). Did a few outreach clubs and have exec positions here and there, but nothing too serious outside of teaching, sports, and research. Lots of awards by the university and province for tennis, high class standing awards, and a bunch of smaller things. I have NO SHADOWING experience, given it isn't emphasized in Canada but please recommend if I should do that to improve my app. Please recommend what I should emphasize on my app, what schools to apply to/focus on, I am a newbie with applications as I am in my 3rd year. Also, if there's something missing or how I can improve my app. Also also, do I have a chance in American MD schools with my ECs? All opinions welcome!

  15. Hi, I noticed that some of my transcripts indicate "yes" to them having been verified. Do any of you know if we will get to see the cGPA or grades they enter manually so that we can verify whether the data was inputted without any errors? Thank you
  16. Hey, so I recently just got my MCAT scores back and CARS was below the UofT cutoff unfortunately. Since the OMSAS application is a whole that is sent to all Ontario schools you apply for, and UofT is likely going to flag my application and reject it for not meeting cutoffs...would my application to Ottawa also be affected? Like wouldn't they see the flag that UofT put on it?
  17. Hey guys, I'm thinking of applying to UOttawa med this year- I just wanted to know; what is the cut-off for the wGPA for anglophone applicants? On their site it says you can email and ask, but the lady won't be back till october 1st (how convenient). Did anyone manage to email this year? I don't wanna assume it's the same as previous years. Thanks!
  18. Hello Everyone, I know this is very late but I was finishing up my application for this cycle and I have noticed that there is no section that is asking for me to enter my grades from my transcript. I remmebr last year I had to manually enter all the courses I took and the grades I received. Am I doing something wrong this year? I can not find that section! there is only a transcript section which you can fill out a transcript request form! Please Help Thanks a lot in advance.
  19. Hi everyone, Can anyone recommend some great podcasts that are good for CASPer? Any relevant ethics podcasts? Thanks so much in advance.
  20. Hi guys, I was wondering whether or not to include the TRAINING I received to become a volunteer as a separate entry in ABS or not. The reason I am asking, is because I have two volunteer positions, one in hospice and one as a research assistant, and both required I complete very lengthy online training and online certifications. For example, for hospice, it was a 13 hour online training that required tests, small essays on a range of topics ranging from palliative care, infectious diseases, caregiver stress, ethics and so on. Likewise for the research assistant position, because it is connected to a long-term care facility, all volunteers had to undergo training on how to care for elderly patients, modules on ethics etc even though my position doesn't have anything to do with that. I am wondering if it's worth making separate entries for these things, or if it is self-explanatory that all volunteer positions must have included training? Thank you!
  21. Hi, I have a quick question regarding inputting verifiers for the OMSAS application. In the past, for entries that can be verified on the transcript we input the number "0". However, this seems to be no longer applicable we must now add a verifier for all entries. Does anyone know if I just use my transcript as a verifier instead? Thanks for your time and help.
  22. Hey, Been reading up on NOSM and trying to look for admission stats and I found some but I'm not sure if it makes sense. I know NOSM has a bias towards applicants from rural settings, particularly northern ontario, but do they always reject applicants from urban areas? I don't see it written anywhere that only rural applicants are applied, but that seems to be what the admission stats I saw say. Has anyone gotten in from urban areas? thanks
  23. Hey! I'm slowly chipping away at my OMSAS application and I have a couple questions: 1) Is there no GPA input anymore? Last year I applied and had to manually enter each course I took and the grade I got, now I don't seem to see that, is the transcript enough? 2) It says Western needs an academic CV placed in the SAM, I do have a CV going but it has pretty much everything I've ever done, if it was strictly school related it would be only my undergraduate career and some work as a research assistant and would seem quite measly... What is expected here? Also what else is SAM used for? I don't remember it being there last year 3) Verifiers on ABS... How strict are they on these because for many things I've done, I don't have a legitimate contact but I know plenty of people (friends and family) that can confirm I have done the thing, is that good enough? 4) How far back should the ABS go? 5) Last year I got an email saying my MCAT score was never received despite providing my AAMC number and test date. I haven't received my score yet for this year's retake but how do I ensure that it gets sent to OMSAS this time around? Thanks!
  24. Hey, I applied to med schools last year via OMSAS and I'm applying again this year, do I need to make a new OMSAS account? I see a reminder on their page that if I made one after August 2016, I don't need a new one, but I've also tried using my IT# log in from last year and it doesnt seem to be working. Thanks!
  25. I have a question regarding eligibility for Ottawa. Here are my course load/ year so far: Year 1: 8 courses = 4.0 credits/FCE year 2: 9 courses = 4.5 credits/ FCE year 3: 10 courses = 5.0 credits/FCE currently taking a summer course. Will that qualify for 3 years of full time studies or 2? I am planning my courses for my 4th year and am deciding wether or not to overload to make all 4 years count in the event I am not granted an interview invite this cycle. If they do I will not need to over load. Thanks in advance for the help!
