  1. So, I heard that an A (80-89%) at York University which converts to a 3.8 on OMSAS is a 4.0 when converted to Amcas. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this. Thanks
  2. I am a high school student who is considering to accept Ryerson’s Biomedical Sciences program. I have been accepted to Western Health Sciences, Brock Medical Sciences (and their MedPlus extra program which is really good), Laurier Health Sciences, Uft Life Sci, Carleton Health Sci, and McMaster Life Sci. My major concerns involve the arrangement of the coop terms. Medical Schools in Canada require at least two school semesters to be consecutive for students enrolled into coop programs. In Ryerson, semesters 5 and 6 are separated by three work terms. I wanted to know if I would be able to keep semesters 5 and 6 together, then have them followed by the three coop terms. On the other hand, if I choose not to take coop, would I be at a disadvantage since most of the research positions will be taken by the coop students? Additionally, I will be a commuting student and would like to know the general timings of the lectures, tutorials and labs last year. Lastly, are there any additional resources at Ryerson that would help me with the MCAT preparation, or the general application of medical school (including volunteering and job shadowing opportunities)? Even for volunteer research places downtown, won't I be competing with UFT students? ANY help and info on Ryerson graduates in med school would help. My goal is to go to a small university where I stand out. I know people in med schools from all universities except ryerson! My financial situation isn't so great either and therefore Ryerson helps. I have to accept an offer by next week.
  3. Hello guys I’m an international student and just got my admission from York University in Biomedical Sciences. I’m interested in the medical or dental school for future studies after getting my bachelor degree in Biomed. I’ve heard from many people that York is not a good choice and I won’t have a chance to enter medical school from York, in another hand, many people suggest me to study my health science major in McMaster University. They say I’ll have a better chance to enter medical or dental school after studying in McMaster as it is well-known for its health science programs. McMaster’s deadline for fall is over and if I want to change my university I have to study 1 or 2 semesters in York and then I can transfer to McMaster. What’s your thought about this? Help me plz
  4. Hi everyone, I've been hearing some mixed things on how YorkU grades are being converted for American Med Schools. I've always heard that an A at York (3.8 OMSAS) is a 4.0 when converted to AMCAS. I've also heard that a B+ (3.3 at York) is a 3.5 when converted. I've read both of these things on these forums. However, when checking the AMCAS site, although, nothing perfectly fits York's Grade Scale, I think an A may actually be a 3.7. Can a recent applicant from YorkU please comment on how their grades were converted when applying? Please and thank you!
  5. Hi! Has anyone taken Biol 3010 (advanced biochem) with Derek Wilson at York? Do you have any tips on how to prepare for the final? Can you also tell me if the final was super hard or easy? Thanks!!
  6. Hey everyone, can anyone please share their any information about the global health undergrad program at York U ? My aim is to get into medical school and the courses seem really interesting in this program but I feel that it will have a lot of essays and I dont think I can get a 3.6+ gpa in that program. Will a biology program be a better choice ? Thank you in advance for your time and guidance in this matter Cheers !
  7. Hi Everyone, I am a current grade 12 student and I need some urgent help. I recently accepted my offer to University of Toronto (Scarborough) Life Sciences with the intention of attending some sort of professional school after I graduate (med, dental, pharm, etc.). I know I know, I've heard about all the horror stories at U of T. However, both my siblings went to this campus and said that getting a high GPA is very doable but I have to work hard. They also said that the small campus is really nice, and its not too hard to make connections with professors. In fact, one of my siblings recently graduated from this campus and went on to attend a medical school in Ontario right out of her fourth year. My other sibling, did not recommend UTSC as much, but still managed to get a 4.0 GPA. After hearing their stories, I thought maybe I can succeed at UTSC as well, and decided to accept my offer there. UTSC is also very close to my home, so that was another factor I had to consider. I was also accepted into Biomedical Science at York University (which is about a 45 - 1 hour bus ride away). Although I accepted my offer to UTSC, York University kept their offer on the table but will withdraw it within a matter of weeks. A couple of my friends who went to York said attaining a high GPA there is very possible if I work hard enough. They also said research is available, but not to the extent that it is available at a place like UTSC. One of my friends has a 3.98 GPA in her first year. Even though I accepted my offer to UTSC, I am having large amounts of regret. I am scared that my GPA will not be high enough at UTSC and York might have actually been better for me. In high school, I am a hard working student and I got 90's and high 80's in my courses but I'm not a genius. Do you think that I should revoke my acceptance to UTSC and accept to York instead? What are the pros and cons? I would really appreciate advice from former students from these institutions. Another factor to consider is that on the OMSAS GPA scale, an 80-89 at York is a 3.8 no matter where your marks end up in that range, but an 80-85 is a 3.7 and an 85-89 at UTSC is a 3.9 at UTSC. Thanks so much everyone!
  8. Hello everyone, I am currently transitioning into grade 12 and I decided to look into which university to go to for my undergraduate degree. Upon further investigation pertaining to the admission statistics posted by the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, I've noticed that only 5 students from York have made it to Med School AT UofT compared to the 60+ from Mac or 55 from UofT. This lead to me question the number of students from York University who've actually made it to medical school in general and why people keep suggesting high school students to go to York? Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you'll be able to answer my question.
