Interesting rebuttal to a previous Ottawa Citizen article by Dr. John Stewart.

Apparently the deadline for Saudi Residents to leave the country has been moved to September 22nd:

Changing the deadline won't make much of a difference at least in Hamilton. The residents are already gone for theoat part. Maybe the surgical ones are still around in some places?

Wasn't too long ago that staying a bit late was the norm in most programs. When I was an R1 it was fairly usual to be in the hospital at least til mid-morning post-call, and sometimes until early afternoon. We'd just started night float that year so that might have something to do with the "it's 8am cya" mentality that subsequently developed.

same for me - only a few blocks got you out of there fast.

not that I think 24 hours isn't "enough" ha. I would rather work harder in the morning to let collectively the call people leave sooner.

I think it could be a sign that there is some backtracking. I think there is a good chance they will be allowed to stay.

Not confident, 1 of the off service residents has already gotten out of a lease and flight booked for this week.

Sometimes once this news story gets out of the limelight, both sides feel comfortable quietly backing down. Both countries remind me of two stag elk show fighting in front of the ladies. Once the attention dies down, they quietly back down haha. It is all about pride.

The Saudi medical trainees have been allowed to stay "until an alternative assignment is arranged".

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-more-than-1000-saudi-medical-trainees-to-be-allowed-to-stay-in-canada/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+/+Media&utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links

"Ordering the trainees out of Canada would have jeopardized their future careers and forced hospitals to look for ways to fill the gaps left by their sudden departure, Mr. Cloutier said.

'The hospitals that have many of these trainees will continue as is. You don’t have to scramble,' he said.

Dr. Padmos said the biggest beneficiaries are the trainees themselves, who risked having their careers derailed."

Not to mention that KSA has invested money and time in their training that would have to be written off, since the residents would likely have to start from scratch in a new place - it's probably not that easy to find 1000 trainee positions in a few weeks.  And that would also mean fewer trained specialists in KSA.  (not mentioned in the article).

To me, it sounds like almost a face-saving move from both countries to avoid the repercussions - both sides wanted a deal.

at least that is some breathing room for both them and us.

yeah it is impossible to find 1000 spots in a few weeks ha. It was just a huge mess.

We received the same email from our PG dean at UuofT, it seems that they are allowed to stay, which is good for all the service rotations: less calls for everyone :)

next question is whether any new applicants will be accepted this coming year.
