Med schools are looking for well rounded individuals with active citizenship. Undertake volunteering in areas of interest to you where you are able to show a longterm commitment demonstrating empathy, compassion, making a real contribution, e.g., old age home, mentoring underprivileged children, etc. Research is not necessary. Become genuinely well rounded, contribute to your community in meaningful ways rather than ticking the box of what you believe they want to see. And GPA is king. So, lets say you are a ruthless gunner and get into med school. Then you are a gunner to get into a competitive residency. If you are not a nice person, easy to get along with, genuinely collaborative, just a gunner who did all the right things to have a beautiful CV, you wont be selected for that coveted residency spot.
