Canadian at U.S. med school, coming back to Canada for FM residency?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am currently a second year Canadian student at a U.S. med school, and I have some interests in returning to Canada for a FM residency.

How hard would it be for me to get into a Canadian FM residency, being a Canadian at a U.S. med school? How competitive is FM in Canada? I've noticed on the CaRMS 2018 match data that there were quite a bit of "vacant" spots in FM after the first iteration, so I was hoping that this is a good sign, and that it wouldn't be too hard for me to land a spot somewhere. Am I looking at this CaRMS data correctly?

Thanks for any clarification.

Depends how flexible you are. Many big city FM programs are very competitive.

Apply broadly and do electives in canada but also still apply in the US

What if I am completely flexible, and my goal is to match anywhere in FM in Canada? Would I have a good chance at matching somewhere in Canada?
