In my view there is an advantage to doing something productive partially during summers. That is going to distinguish you from the crowd when it comes to residency application time for competitive specialties and locations. 

I don't think theres anything wrong with enjoying it, but you do have 13 weeks and you can still take several weeks off for yourself. It all depends on what you want, but logically one would imagine a specialist sitting on your committee works 60+ hours a week and likely respects a strong work ethic if forced to choose.
