In most North American groups there is some sort of split amongst the radiologists to even out pay amongst the subspecialties (taking into account whether you work full time or not). Pay in each group will vary depending on how things are split.

With work hours, yes interventional radiology will work more irregular hours because they are performing procedures on patients and if they are called overnight, they have to come into hospital (same as most surgeons and procedural specialists).

These emergent overnight cases are often ones where IR is one of the last line of defense we can attempt before full palliation/death. Just a few days ago my team had a patient bleeding out on the ward and there were no surgical options. For the interventional radiologist, yes it did mean rolling out of bed to come into hospital, but it was a life-saving intervention on a patient that would have had a very different outcome if we didn't have someone like that taking these cases.
