I'm assuming you're from UofT? I think they're the only school that does this specialist - major- minor thing.

However, you are correct. Schools will not favour or look down upon you because of your program choice. If you take the time to network with professors in smaller classes, chances are you will get a nice LOR. There are people who haven't done a day of research and got in medical school. You don't need a LOR from a research professor to tick any boxes - as long as your references know you in a professional capacity, they're good.
