TheOne1
Anyone have tips on performing this. The cervix can be an elusive devil. I go down at an angle of 45 degrees to the posterior fornix and sweep the blades up to open. I think maybe I bail out too quickly because the patient is so uncomfortable since we can't use lubricant? Arztin
You can press against the posterior side. Then sweep slowly. People's cervix is at different places. And why isn't your place allowing you to use lubricant?
blueoval177
My FM preceptor would flip the speculum upside down, mind you its the plastic ones, and somehow that would drop a trickier view into place. I second the lubrication question, why is that an issue?

When I was in residency, I was told you could use a small amount of lubricant still. It was never a problem for me.

Never messed up a fern. You do not need alot of lube either.
frenchpress
You can also lubricate with a bit of sterile water - I often use water instead of lubricant in the clinic too, as many women prefer it when given the option.
