I would have to respectfully disagree with that.  At least from personal experience in family medicine.  

A lot of patients are already experts, already knowing what they need before the appointment even starts.

I'm not sure what the point of that dichotomy would be.

I'm honestly not sure if Doctors are more respected than nurses, on the whole. Opinion surveys have shown nurses to have more respect in the past.

If we're playing this game why not Doctor vs. University professor? Doctor vs. Veterinarian? Doctor vs. Defense Lawyer? Doctor vs. Firefighter? It's a pointless comparison. 

If we're playing the "My parents say Doctor/Dentist>Lawyer>bust" game that's different, but still shortsighted.
