Recognition of Australian Specialization Degrees in Canada

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone knows how specialization degrees from Australia are recognized in Canada? I'm a Canadian, and I'll be starting my DMD degree at the University of Sydney this year, and would like to know my options regarding specialization. I've been looking into specialist degrees such as the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) offered by the University of Sydney and Melbourne in various specializations including Ortho, Endo, and OMFS. Does anyone know whether or not such post-graduate degrees from Australian institutions will be recognized in Canada, and will allow for practice of said specialization?

Thanks!

Yeah, I believe only the DMD degree is reciprocal whereas specializations must be completed in Canada to be recognized. Although you can specialize in Australia afterward if you plan on staying.

I'm also having a hard time finding any information about Australian grads who have returned to Canada, and if any have managed to get into specializations. Let me know if you find any other information!

http://www.cda-adc.ca/cdacweb/en/international_professionals/ Here the CDAC specifies that reciprocity with Australia and subsequent countries is only for general dentistry (DDS/DMD). However they accept American accreditation: "For the purpose of certification and licensure in Canada, only programs that are accredited by either CDAC or the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) are considered accredited" So I believe only specialty programs in the US or Canada are accepted.
