Mine were contacted last year post-interview and I still got rejected ( my total ranking was 18 spots away from the last waitlisted person as my science pre-req GPA is very weak). It is not really a reference that they give, but more of a verification that your CV inputs are true. In other meanings, even if your verifiers give amazing feedback about you, it won't impact the way your file will be evaluated. All that been said, if they contacted your verifiers, it could probably mean that you have a really good CV, which is a good thing .
