McMaster Research Opportunities

Hi everyone,

I am a first year student studying at McMaster and I want to start getting into research soon. Does anyone know if there are any programs or opportunities at McMaster that I can apply to or do I have to cold-email professors? Also, what time do you think it is best to start applying (Dec/Jan/Feb)?

NSERC USRAs for the summer should be open soon. You can pretty much cold-email any supervisors who do work you're interested: don't be discouraged if they don't get back to you though, just be persistent and email many PIs. As long as you vibe well with the PI, most prof's are happy to have a volunteer in the lab. Other than that, some labs also have the budget to hire students for work/study but those are few and far between.

I believe the NSERC due date is somewhere in Mid-Feb so I would start emailing the profs right about now!

Chat with professors after lecture or during office hours about research opportunities! I found this to be way more reliable than cold calling when I was in undergrad, personally.

I think first years aren't eligible for NSERC till they have first year marks posted. But cold call PIs for volunteer positions/work study
