Hey peeps, so i am planning on applying to dental school during my 5th year at york

My best GPA for 2 best years were 4.0 which from what I understand becomes a 95% for Western.  Now excluding my worst year my GPAs were 3.77 , 3.9 , 4.0 , 4.0 (for UofT.) Excluding DAT, how else can I improve my application to become very competitive?

Attached is the current list of the ECs that I have done.

Thank you!

Hello everyone!

For the longest time I was planning to apply to medical schools and study medicine. However, for several reasons I chose to apply for UofT and Western dental schools. This was very last minute so I had around 2 weeks to study for November 2019 DAT. I just received my scores and I got 21 AA, 20 RC, and 19 PAT. My cGPA is 3.9 and the average of my two highest years (for western) is 94. I graduated in June and I am currently working as a research assistant. I have lots of volunteering and extra-curricular activities. I have also published a paper in a high impact journal.

I am very new to the dentistry world and was wondering what do you guys think about my chance of getting an interview from UofT or Western?

I really appreciate your help!

From what I've read on other websites/threads/requirements for schools, you have a good chance of getting in with your stats. But also take in consideration, it depends on the pool of students applying for that year and where you stand amongst them. Good luck! I hope you get in.

ps- I'd be interested in how you studied in two weeks for DAT and still managed to get pretty decent score. As in what resources you used, etc.  I will be writing mine in feb 2020 so any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks,

Makes sense. Thank you!

I've studied for MCAT before and was teaching it this past summer so I was already prepared for the science and reading comprehension sections. I only prepared for PAT and used CrackDAT to study for that. I might study properly this time and re-take the test in case I could not get in this time.

Hello Everyone

I applied to UBC Dentistry this cycle (2019/2020) and I was wondering what are my chances. My GPA is 4.2/4.33 with the worst year dropped (I don't know how UBC  Dental converts to percentege,  but using UBC Med it is 92%). But my DAT score is not high 20AA/19PAT. I was wondering what are my chances given I have good references/extracurricular. And I am also in province.

Summary:

IP

GPA 4.2/4.33 (GPA>90%)

DAT: 20AA/19PAT

Appreciate your guys input.

Your stats are definitely favourable and should get you very far. My advice at this point is if you get an interview, to really communicate your interest in dentistry. To add to this narrative I would look into shadowing between now and interviews to provide evidence that you have seriously contemplated life as a dentist.

If for whatever reason you end up reapplying, I would say to make sure you spend time crafting a PS that is convincing that you will be a good dentist. Dental schools don't want to be a fallback to medicine. They want to know that you have the specific skills to excel in dentistry and see the necessary passion to go along with it.

Hey guys,

So I just got my DAT results for Nov 2019. I got 22 RC, 20 PAT, 19 Science Average and 20 AA. Should I retake the test to boost my Science Average? I plan on applying to Western’s Schulich Dentistry. I’m a track athlete on scholarship at a U.S. school. I have a GPA of my two best years of 95% and have good extracurriculars as a tutor/TA in my school’s Chemistry Dept as well as lots of hours volunteering/shadowing.

Is it worth applying to dental school in Ontario with these stats, specifically UWO

DAT score AA 20, PAT 19, RC, 21

GPA best 2 years: 82%

ECs: 200+hrs of shadowing, founded non-profit, 2 research positions, 1 future publication, hospital volunteering, case competition winner + internatiol experience

Undergraduate + Masters Degree

I also have spent a really long time writing the supplemental application, which I would say is a solid 8/10.

How about applying out of province?

I was wondering if I have a good shot in getting an interview at UofT and UWO Dental School... should I retake the DAT/increase GPA/do more ECs?

DAT: 21/21/21

Best two years: 87.5%

ECs: Founder and president of Club, various VP roles of clubs, one philanthropic volunteer role for 2 years and ongoing

Research: 1 neuroscience paper publication, long term RA at a university lab, as well one other RA job at a hospital for a year

Shadowing: A TON of shadowing from both dentists and doctors

Any insight would help please.. im dyin here :( I'm currently in my fourth year and my first year grades were complete garbage so im glad u of T and UWO takes the best two years if im applying in my fourth year (please correct me if I'm wrong please!) and fourth year is going good so far, all 90+ grades but it doesnt count if im applying this year...

I think ur exactly the average applicant in terms of DAT and GPA. I can’t really comment on extracurriculars.

accepting GPA was on average 3.93 (U of T) which I thinks translates to 87.5%?
Accepting DAT was on average 21/21 for AA/PAT for U of T

but then there is Casper and the two papers we handed in.. so idk how much weight those are

I think if u perform well in interview, you have a chance of acceptance,

Hi everyone,

I just checked my DAT scores today the break down was 23 AA/ 25 RC/ 18 PAT - tbh I have no idea how these scores really translate in terms of applying to UWO and U of T. Would the 18 PAT hold me back ? I didn't bother applying this cycle (which I now regret) because I thought my PAT score for sure would be really low (like <15 - guessed basically whole section lol) and put in minimal effort into really prepping for this exam. I don't know if it would be worth the rewrite ($$) because my AA and RC scores seem okay, but at same time, maybe with decent preparation my scores could be much higher?

Essentially:

1) Would the 18 PAT hold me back substantially when applying to Ontario schools next year? (GPA~ low-mid 3.9/90% avg)

2) Would my score warrant a re-write given my PAT score?

Thank you
